Types Of Plumbing Pipes

By Scott Rodgers

There are many different types of choices when it comes to plumbing your home. For water supply, there is PVC, CPVC, PEX, Galvanized, and copper pipes. Copper and CPVC are the most popular. CPVC is the easiest to install.

Galvanized pipes can rust very easily from inside and can restrict the flow of water and then you will have to get them replaced as it can further damage your plumbing system. Therefore, it is not advisable to go for galvanized pipes.

A specific type of glue is used to join the CPVC pipes together. These pipes are cleans before gluing with a specific type of cleaner. The glue and the cleaner make it very strong and safe for home plumbing but these should be used very carefully and in a well ventilated area only.

Copper pipes are also a popular choice. These pipes are soldered. For this you need to have a torch, but be very careful while using it. Also keep a spray bottle of water while performing this task.

PEX tubing is used for radiant floor heating systems because of its flexibility. The turns are easily made allowing for the loops to be made with ease. PEX can also be used for hot and cold water supply. You must have a special tool to crimp the fittings when joining the tubing to a fitting.

One must be very careful while trying any kind of plumbing task. You should always read the instructions and the warnings before starting with the task. Make use of all the safety equipments. Soldering of copper pipes requires a torch that can be harmful for you if not handled properly.

Eye protection should be used no matter which type of plumbing you are going to do.

Tubing cutters are sharp enough to cut you if you are not careful. The glue used for CPVC puts off a vapor that is toxic if used in a small enclosed space. Safety should always be first. If you are physically unable to do your own plumbing, please hire a professional to do it for you.
