This created a friendly, non-threatening environment to test each individual's knowledge. Scores were recorded on electronic tags and rewards could be given at the end of the evening. Executive interviews within this theme were given a revamp with the use of green screens where corporate graphics and visuals could be inserted behind each person talking. An attractive first impression is created and the high end corporate look and feel is a highly effective means of promoting a company.

The game factor along with the Wizards Academy feel made for a showy and entertaining experience. With captivating animation and a huge amount of technical support and innovation, this interactive 'game training' method, monitored and controlled by a hub of central computers, proved to be a real hit.

Wonder outside of this area and you have Line Lexington, Pennsylvania, a busier Philadelphia suburb near Hatfield with its share of interesting restaurants and dives. A standout, for all the wrong reasons is the Zoto's Diner (also referred to as Zoto's Family Restaurant and Diner) on Bethlehem Pike. Of course it's a 'shopping center' dive but with the interesting branding we thought a visit was in order. Hoping to uncover the next big thing in Bucks County we only left suffering from stomach pains, buyer's remorse and the feeling that 95 minutes of our lives were stolen without redemption.

Zoto's Diner is a dive that resembles the geriatric unit of your regional 'state owned' sanatorium and the smell, or shall I say 'odor' is reminiscent of mushroom soup, adult diapers, cheap spaghetti and dog food.

Walking into this dive you'll experience an odd combination of a pretentious, cheaply perfumed, makeup caked street walker that will show you to your booth. If you're one of the fortunate few to get a table without butter smeared all over the top and chicken soup drizzled on the 1970's style cushion seat, then count your blessings because that is most likely the best thing that could happen to you at this glorified greasy spoon. Think, North Philly, meets Compton section of Los Angeles but only with a Caucasian waitress sporting a grime caked ponytail, yellow armpit stained shirt and probably the most racist individuals you'll ever meet.

I was eating there with a fellow writer from Korea and the way they treated him was so unbelievably despicable it made me sick. Sure he had an accent but he was making every effort to be polite and kind and to assimilate. His goal was to gather information for a travel journal he was righting to be published in the spring. Instead of unique material that he could add to his book he was slammed with an ignorant, obese, obscenely despicable receptionist, waitress and cashier. I really felt bad for him. I travel constantly as this is part of the writing biz and I have never witnessed anything even remotely close to this but we didn't even get to the food yet.


After about 20 minutes of sitting with no service I asked the waitress, assigned to our section, if I could have a menu. She looked at me, looked at my colleague and with a huff and puff returned with two of the grimiest and stained circa 1945 menus I've ever seen. I felt as though touching these smelly antiques would cause them to disintegrate in my hands or by that I would get some type of skin disease from touching the surface. Hmm, boiled chicken, chicken soup, mashed potatoes, so gross. Well, we've been sitting here, may as well just order, eat and get the heck out. We both ordered the chicken and potato platter. This automaton waitress wouldn't so much as acknowledge my friend so I ordered for him.

The food, to be perfectly objective, open minded and as positive as humanely possible was absolutely the most disgusting culinary disaster I've experienced in 39 years of memory. The chicken was stringy and cold, the potatoes had hard, crackly pieces throughout and it was all covered with this puss colored gravy which, by using my imagination, tasted identical to what it looked like.

Listen, there are so many places to eat in the area, steer clear of Zoto's Diner, it is, hands down, a grease infested, mind blowing experience that will damage your taste buds and make your heart ache. I say it will make your heart ache because the staff was so unified under this umbrella of obvious hat and disdain for someone that was different and now, when he goes back to his country to write about our area, the only thing that will stick in his mind is the pure hate, unbridled racism and stomach turning, putrid gastronomical hodgepodge served at Zoto's Diner, the hell on earth for diners in the Bucks/Mont area.

Although technology has enhanced our society and our capabilities, unfortunately there are some downfalls. Reasons People Grieve

We grieve as instinctive response to loss. It is the pain that you experience when someone who or something that is part of your life, someone or something you cherish, is no longer there.

The scenarios enumerated earlier can all cause a person to undergo a time of grieving. Nevertheless, the most intense pain that we feel is when a person we love - such as a spouse, a son or daughter, or a parent- passes away. Nothing can ever take their place in our hearts and memories.

Our entire lives, we may have made the people who passed away the core of our existence. Thus, life is now never the same as it were when our loved ones were still with us. We grieve for what we have lost. Yet, in our grief, we have the hope of being able to heal our anguish and strengthen our lives to move forward again.

There is no correct or incorrect way to express grief. Still, we must choose the path that can encourage us to heal after all the loss that we experienced.

It is common presumption that grieving should be accompanied by crying our hearts out every time we recall our loved ones who passed away. Still, tears do not always signify sorrow. One can look unemotional on the outside yet is breaking up from the pain of loss within.

Moreover, in opposition to the myth, grieving does not only cover a single year. Grieving's duration differs from individual to individual. No one should be rushed and "get over" the grief that they are experiencing. Time is a great healer.

Reconciliation of Intercompany Accounts

Definition

Intercompany accounts are accounts in an organization's General Ledger that maintain a balance of payments due from, or to, organizations related by common ownership or control. For instance, If business "A" makes widgets and sells them for $100 to a sister-company, company "B", an intercompany association exists, or should exist, in the General Ledger where Company "B" carries an Intercompany Payable to Company "A" and, conversely, Company "A" has an Intercompany Receivable from Organization "B".

At the conclusion of each accounting period, the consolidated Intercompany Accounts Receivable and Intercompany Accounts Payable must have the identical balances, a debit for the Intercompany A/R and a credit in Intercompany A/P.

Problem

Many businesses endure reconciliation problems related to intercompany accounts. For many, this problem can lead to the books to be kept open for days or weeks longer than necessary. We are familliar with an organization where it was not unusual to have the intercompany accounts out of balance by several million dollars every month. Unless a company implements the correct controls to keep the balances in check, the problem will continue growing and as it multiplies, it will become thoroughly unmanageable.

The reasons for these out-of-balance conditions commonly begin very small - If Company "A" from the previous part sells a widget to Company "B" for $100 and charges $10 freight, but the Purchasing Dept for Company "B" tells their Accounts Payable Department that it's not on the Purchase Order, so we are not paying for it, the business will have an out-of-balance situation if the problem is not remedied by the end of the accounting period. A lot of organizations also pass an intercompany charge to their subsidiaries based on their Working Capital as an inducement to keep Working Capital as low as possible to avoid excessive intercompany charges. If there is a disagreement in the computation, this could also cause an discrepancy in the Intercompany Accounts. Any absence of clarity on the part of the entity passing the charge, or a lack of acceptance on the part of the organization receiving the charge, has the possibility to trigger an out-of-balance scenario.

Experience

Our experience ranges from companies with only a few entities and massive problems with balancing the accounts, to large companies with thousands of entities that have few issues in getting the accounts to balance.

You can obviously reorganize these into four categories:

but I sought to show that the responsibility for both communication and clarity resides upon both the receiving entity and the passing entity; and Corporate headquarters can fail to support the reconciliation process in several ways, of which, policies, procedures and dispute resolution are the most typical.

In studying this issue, we have seen many technology-based solutions proposed and, no offence to the programmers, tend to be significantly more cumbersome than the processes they replaced. Such solutions will not cause your accounts to balance, they give you the cabability to enforce the process from a higher level. Enforcing the process without addressing clarity, communications, and additional corporate support, will only yield nominal, if any, success and cause an even greater level of frustration due to the investment in systems without the envisioned Return on Investment.

Responsibility

By definition, the responsibility for ensuring that Intercompany Accounts (or any accounts, for that matter) rests firmly with the Controller of the enterprise. Many organizations might not have a person with the title of Controller, but it's usually apparent who the person is who performs the controllership functions. In virtually all organizations, the Controller must have ownership of the Balance Sheet of the organization and be the guardian of the financial policies and procedures. By extension, as the Controller must own the Balance Sheet and support the reconciliation process, executive management i.e. CFO, CEO, Vice Presidents, etc.. must support the Controllers' authority to enforce the timely reconciliation of the Intercompany Accounts.

Many organizations that develop intercompany challenges have a matrix or semi-matrixed reporting structure. This situation has the nasty habit of splitting allegiances. It has to be clear that the Corporate Controller with the parent company is the final arbiter in the reconciliation of Intercompany Account disputes with and between subsidiaries, unless the resolution is in violation of a law.

Just as the Corporate Controller has ownership of the Balance Sheet of the organization, Division Controllers have the same responsibilities for their divisions and must be accountable to the Controller at the next level up in the organization. This responsibility chain proceeds down to the Plant Controllers (or equivalent), who must also be accountable to the Controller(s) above them in the corporate food chain.

Resolution

Setting up an environment containing an effective intercompany reconciliation process depends on education. The training, however, has to be preceded by top-down policies. These must include, but not limited to:

Responsibility for internal control Responsibility for reconciliation General process for reconciliation Specific format for reconciliation Transfer pricing policies Foreign currency policies Intercompany cut-off policies Formal confirmation policy & procedure Dispute resolution policy & procedure

After policies are established (and controlled), the appropriate staff members will require training, from the top of the financial hierarchy to the bottom. Especially when first put in place, the policies and procedures should be evaluated frequently to make sure that they deal with common company-specific challenges that arise during the first few months of implementation. Great care ought to be exercised, however, to make sure that policies aren't changed simply to ensure compliance. Every time the policies are examined due to an issue, the question should be asked as to whether the problem lies in the policy, the procedures or the process. After effective policies are established and implemented organization-wide, the issues that arise will typically deal with process or procedure issues. Bear in mind, the policies are in place as a shield for the organization and the basis for processes and procedures that are in compliance with the policy.

What if you're already down the road and have a massive reconciliation mess to deal with? The same laws of intercompany reconciliation still hold true.
