ITIL Training - Are We Ready for V3

It has now been two years since the launch of ITIL (R) Version 3, the new version of best practice guidance for service management from the OGC (Office of Government Commerce). For these past two years, the administrators of the new qualifications scheme (APMG), together with examination institutes and training providers, have been busy getting the new ITIL Expert qualification off the ground.

But the whole thing could be dead in the water before it has even got going properly according to the most recently published figures for ITIL training. It seems that whilst the foundation course is popular for version 3, the more advanced training courses have been rather slow to take-off.

Perhaps the reason for this situation is the sheer number of courses needed to be taken to qualify as an ITIL Expert. Delegates now need to complete six or seven separate courses to qualify; which translates into between twenty-two to twenty-seven days of training. By contrast, the older V2 scheme leading to the Service Manager certificate only took thirteen days to complete.

The new qualification schema is a three-level affair with a fourth level also scheduled. Of course, this new range of courses may be good for training providers, but the key question is: is it right for the market? The absence of a significant number of bums-on-seats seems to me to suggest that it absolutely is not.

Also, whilst the old V2 qualifications scheme is still running, it makes little sense for people to pursue the new route to the professional qualification when you can also get it through the V2 route simply by doing a bridging course at the end. And this track is not only cheaper, but quicker and more convenient for most people.

It is, in my opinion, time for APMG to be decisive and act immediately to support the V3 qualifications scheme. It is finally time to axe the old V2 qualifications and really get behind the new scheme.

Ardbeg: From Peat Bogs to Riches

The first distillery at Ardbeg on the island of Islay was built by the McDougall brothers at Ardbeg farm in 1798 and run as a commercial business from 1815. However the Ardbeg area was much favoured by smugglers and illicit distillers and distilling had probably been going on in the neighbourhood for some time previously. The excise men discovered a large cache of illicit whisky at the end of the 18th century. During the 18th century many small illicit distilleries were set up by farmers as a way of using up their excess barley.

The water used in the distillery comes from loch Uigidale, which incidentally has lent its name to Ardbeg's latest bottling. The loch water is very soft and peaty and contributes to the distinctive flavour of Ardbeg whisky, said to be the most peat smoked of all Scotland's whiskies.

The distillery grew quickly and by the 1880's it employed 60 local people compared to the 10 employed today. It was successfully managed by two McDougal sisters and by the end of the 19th century its annual production exceeded 1 million litres of whisky.

Ardbeg is known for its sea salt and iodine flavours. This comes from its position by the sea shore where many years of salt laden winds have impregnated the very buildings themselves. Today the two small piers that used to bring supplies into the distillery are still used by local fisherman and tourists. The nearby Distillery Farm was run in tandem with the distillery for many years with the distillery workers required to take a turn at cutting the peat used in the malting.

The McDougal family finally gave up control of the distillery in 1959 and it was eventually taken over by Allied Distillers. Allied closed the distillery in 1981 to concentrate production at the nearby Laphroaig distillery. To the horror of the ardent Ardbeg aficionado Allied believed that Laphroaig was sufficiently similar to Ardbeg to satisfy demand.

At one time Ardbeg produced its own malt. The malting was unusual in that they had no fans in the pagodas on the roof, causing the peat smoke to permeate the malt for longer than at most distilleries. These days the malt comes from the maltings at Port Ellen although the high level of peatiness is still a requirement.

When Allied Distillers decided to put Ardbeg up for sale in 1996 there was considerable interest from many quarters and the distillery was finally bought by Glenmorangie PLC. Glenmorangie have been committed to investing in Ardbeg and have built the business up into the thriving distilling complex on the site today, a fascinating mixture of the traditional and the modern.

In 1999 Ardbeg produced 550,000 litres of whisky. This had almost doubled to 1 million litres by 2003. Today Ardbeg produces 160 barrels a week. Each barrel contains 250 bottles. This adds up to a staggering 40,000 bottles of Ardbeg whisky each week.

These books have been influential on the way in which consultants relate to and understand their clients and corporations conduct self-analysis.

Among Magazines and Periodicals:

The Harvard Business review always has at least one good, timely article to enjoy. I have never read the whole magazine, but I still do read it regularly. I learn something interesting and pertinent every time. There are always specific articles on how to implement good practices in business, such as encouraging bottoms-up innovation and setting up organizational systems to retain good employees.

The Economist is quite good. Because I have had experience with McKinsey, it has been surprising to me to find out how many people keep up with The Economist regularly. I always subscribe to The Economist. It really helps with understanding the most important issues in today's global economy. The business, economics, and finance sections are especially interesting.

In general every client is different. Clients with a larger marketing budget will be open and usually more flexible to trying new mediums they haven't used before. Whereas the client with a limited budget will find it difficult to do so.

What you need to do is make sure that everything you help your clients with can be measured with results of some sort. If it's measurable it can be tested and proved and you'll see what is working and what needs changing.

Can You Save Time By...?

Let's face it, the internet is full of information designed to make our lives more livable or to help us to make more money. But the problem today is we don't have the time or ability to print out and read all those great books like "Make Money Fast With Your 8 Track Stereo" or "Cutting Your Toenails For Fun And Profit". Nope, I haven't read those either and it is doubtful I will even if I can listen to them.

I can be more productive while driving around town or to work listening to motivational/educational information on the radio. I've managed to find some motivational products to download to my mp3 player and listen to them in the car as I run errands and such.

Listening to moog music and motivational stuff isn't increasing my bottom line. Far better to be able to listen to the likes of Yanik Silva or Stephen Pierce talk about how they double their income in 30 days or something of that nature. But, so far the only audio information of this type I've found has been audio books recorded by the author of the ebook, sold to internet marketers as stocking stuffers. That isn't what I want - I want to be able to listen to the horse as it were and get real information from the gurus.

Even though it may stretch me timewise, I'm now making time to record the ebook of every guru in my collection. This way I can listen to them in my car and I'll build an audio library that will be the envy of every information marketer and learn in the process.

Not only will I be able to retain more of what I read - I've read that reading out loud helps retain more, I'll also be able to pop one of those recordings in the mp3 player and take it with me wherever I go. I've only begun this project yet, with the goal of recording at least one ebook per week, I'm forcing myself to learn new material every week.

First, Going Concern Concept. In this field, it is presumed that an enterprise will exist for a long time. Consequently, transactions are recorded from this perspective. Because of this, there must be differentiation between expenditure that will cause benefit over a long period, and those with benefits that will be quickly exhausted. Necessarily, if it is obvious that the concerned venture will exist only for a limited time, the accounting record will state the same.

Second, Dual-Aspect Concepts. Each transaction has two facets. If an enterprise has bought, or somehow procured an asset, it must have resulted in any of these: some other asset has bee sacrificed; or
 the obligation to pay arises; or
 there is gain, or profit, which is actually the amount that the business owes to the owner or
 the proprietor has given money for the acquisition of the asset thus mentioned.


Second, Dual-Aspect Concepts. Each transaction has two aspects. If a business has acquired an asset, it must have resulted in one of the following: some other asset has been given up; or
 the obligation to pay for it has arisen; or
 there has been a profit, leading to an the amount that the business owes to the proprietor; or
 the proprietor has contributed money for the acquisition of the asset.
In accounting the two effects of an entry will be recorded.

Third is the Realization Concept. Accounting is a time-oriented record of transaction; it encodes what has already transpired and does not predict events. However, the anticipated adverse effect of events that have already happened are usually recorded.

No profit or income could likewise be considered as realized.

More Web Traffic Starts With Decent Keyword Research

Would you be interested in knowing what keyword phrases Google think are the most relevant to your google search query? Would you like results returned to be up to date all the time? How about being able to access the information anytime you need it?



And furthermore what about if I mentioned that you could access all the info using nothing but a browser and a standard Google search?

At least a little bit interested? Then continue reading....

Firstly lets start with the basics and spend a moment discussing relevance, as this term is at the very core of Googles search engine results.

Google wants to provide the person searching with extremely accurate and relevant results possible. Google know that if they are unable to provide this info, it's likely that users will stop using their services altogether, and no users means no Adwords revenues which is their primary source of income!

For a classic example of a search engine dropping the ball, spend a second for AltaVista? Back in the day it was the most used search engine, and very quickly lost the crown to Google because they lost the plot with relevance.

I doubt there is such a thing as search engine loyalty (at least not for the non Internet Marketing search engine person). If a better solution arrives, the average user will just start using that search engine.

Trust me when I say Google are very conscious of this, and put enormous thought and manpower into making sure that when you search for something, the results returned are very related to your search term.

They have to keep the everyday user happy so that they use Google all the time.

Web masters have, of course located methods to "game" Google in the past, so that their own web pages show up in place of what should be the most relevant results, and such techniques are still used today.

Usually these black hat techniques are located by Google who is getting smarter at locating these types of hacks.

Google seems to get it right a lot of the time, and certainly more than the other major search engines at this point in time.

Ok so given that Google is now returning the most relevant results and has the largest user base when compared to any other search engine, and that its clear that their primary goal is info relevance to their searchers, doesn't it make sense to go to their search results and be using this information more when conducting keyword research?

For example lets say your searching for the keyword phrase web traffic

When I entered that search term into google, I got a list of current pages that Google tell us are the most relevance to that search term (along with a host of ads).

But in additional to this information at the bottom of the page they also provide (and here is the key)....

Searches RELATED to: increase site traffic (Their words).

Hmm interesting a list of keywords that Google think are relevant to my search.

Google actually display to you the keywords that they deem to be the most relevant to your search phrase.

If you do some research about this, there is some speculation on how google decide on what search terms are displayed, but no matter what you think I think it's certainly worth looking at, isn't it?

In my testing I found the keywords it came up with seemed to be keywords heavily searched on.

In the case of web traffic, the keyword phrases I got back were

increase web traffic free web traffic buy web traffic google web traffic web traffic report web traffic generator web traffic monitoring measure web traffic

They all seem pretty related to my original search.

And you can drill down by clicking on a keyword to get relevant keywords to that phrase. For example I could have selected increase web traffic and received a list of related phrases that relate to that term.

This is getting interesting. Before you discount this technique compared to using your favorite keyword tool, I would ask that you consider the following.

1) The information from these searches are directly from Googles Server, so the data has not been corrupted in any way.

Many keyword research tools do not use information from Google at all (Wordtracker) or combine information from multiple sources. Here we have information direct from the source!

2) The information returned from Google is of course very up to date, unlike a lot of other keyword research information that can be months out of date.

I am not saying that you abandon all other keyword tools in favor of this method, but I do recommend you check it out. With all the latest whiz bang all conquering, overly hyped software tools that seemingly gets released everyday, sometimes it pays to take a step back and go back to just using a very simple method like searching in Google!

In my case, I actually use this method in conjunction with other keyword tools, and get the best out of both worlds. My two favorite keyword research tools currently are Nichebot and Market Samurai (google them).

I find the best use of this technique is when searching new niches, or when trying to establish the viability of entering a particular niche.

One final thing to note is that unfortunately not all keywords are supported. Sometimes there are no related search terms come back for a given keyword, but given that it's free I'm happy to not be too worried about that oversight.

And sometimes I have to say the terms returned seem a little weird. But this seems to be in more unusual niches that perhaps Google have not collected enough information for (my speculation).

Get out there and take a look at the related search function in Google. The keyword phrases that come back might end up being very useful.
