SEO for Beginners - What You Need to Know

By Tina Beck

Banish all doubts about being able to reach the pinnacle of SEO success in your niche; it is doable and you have the smarts to do it. Maybe some people avoid it because it is not instant traffic or money, or perhaps it is all the work required. Yes, of course there is a lot to it, when you are first learning, but once learned you just do it. SEO requires a deep commitment from anyone who does it, and if that describes you then great. We can get you going with some basic knowledge, but there is a lot more to find out.

There is nothing wrong with a simple approach, and that is what we recommend for your website or blog design. There is only one thing that your visitors will ever want, and that is excellent information that gives value - not fancy things that do not matter. Search engine algorithms have come a long way, and they will know if your site is loading slowly or your visitors are leaving quickly. So aim to make a good impression not only the visitors, but also the search engines.

Internal linking within your site is something you should discover more on because it will help you. Wikipedia happens to be the biggest example of how powerful internal link building can turn out to be. Never put the cart before the horse, and with this we mean that you need to know what you are doing before you jump in with both feet. A good guideline with this is to think about what would really annoy your readers, and then do not do it.

Of course you want to add a sitemap whether you have a static HTML site or of course a blog. A good sitemap is very useful for the search engines because it makes their index more accurate, and that means your sites' pages will be where they are supposed to be. Nowadays it's really easy to generate a site map with automated scripts and plugins. Chances are that without a sitemap, your site won't even get indexed! You can find several different variations of the plugin, but they all basically do the same thing.

SEO is another area in which the knowledge builds on itself, and that means the basics are very important. The approach is simple in that you learn what to do, and then you take the right action to get it done. Getting to the top of the first page will require some time and of course work, so be prepared for that. Even though there is much to understand, none of it is hard to grasp or even do, and that is key to realizing.
