How do you become a famous rock star?

By Martin Esteban

You've always fantasised about the bright lights, the big stage, the adoring fans. Do you love music and want to share it with the world?

Maybe you feel like you would be able to do it on your own, on the other hand, wouldn't it be better to share it with a group of friends in a group? Get together with some friends who share the same ideals so that you can start rocking out.

Between you and your friends you might be able to get everyone you need together to form your band but if you're missing a drummer or some other vital member then try searching on line, using sites like craigslist or gumtree to find other aspiring musicians who could join your band.

It might be more straight forward initially to start a band with your friends and associates but in the long run if things don't go according to plan then there could be repercussions. But let's not worry about that , you have loads of bad ass ideas for a name for your band, am I right?

The musical genre you've chosen will have a great influence over the name. You can't choose a name like "Rabbit Tails" for a rock group .

As well as the type of music you play, your prospective audience might have an influence on the name of your band. You don't want to alienate potential new fans or limit your chances of exposure by having a name that's offensive or not broadcast-able.

The saying goes that the best inventions are 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration and it's the same thing with your new band. Be under no illusions, you have a lot of hard work ahead of you to get really good until you're ready for super stardom.

You can practice playing other people's music whilst you're learning but no one ever got hit the big time playing other people's music (ok so actually that's not strictly true). Wouldn't you be happier writing and playing your own songs anyway? After all, that's why you got into all this in the first place?

Get your best music together, the ones you have practised and rehearsed to perfection, record some demos and get some gigs.

Facebook, Twitter, Myspace does anyone still use Myspace? Your own website, handing out flyers - do all of these things to get your music out there and engaging with other people.

If you are able to make your own video to accompany one of your songs and upload it to youtube then that will help, all the better if it ends up going viral and spreading around the internet like wildfire. You can also upload your music to music sharing websites like soundcloud where people can listen to it.

The most important thing to remember is to be persistent but also be realistic, you aren't going to become The Red Hot Chilli Peppers overnight. Believe in yourselves and your music, if you don't then you can't expect your audience to.

Are you ready to rock?
