The Writing Desk: Crucial Office Furniture

By Henry J. Adams

The writing desk has been around for centuries as an important piece of furniture. While the most common designs of modern office desks differ greatly from the designs of a couple centuries ago, these pieces of furniture remain among the most important today. Virtually no work office or home office is complete without a writing desk.

In the past the writing desk was a status symbol that represented wealth, sophistication, and aristocracy. This was considered a gentleman's piece of furniture, where educated men could display their knowledge by writing letters or other correspondence. While some current models of writing desks are still designed with stunning woodworking skills, most modern styles favor a more simple and functional design.

Modern writing desks must be functional above all else. Because of changes in technology, the far majority of designs now have open ends, or at least some type of opening that allows for computer cables to snake on through. This is one of the reasons that computer desks, writing desks, and office desks are often considered one and the same.

What makes a good model or design? That depends on what is most important to the individual buying. All good modern desks are going to have to offer ample space as well as be built with a computer in mind. If you're looking at a corner of a room, then an L-shaped desk could be a great desk. In a narrow room against the wall, not so much.

One consistent truth that holds through is that you will find a writing desk of some type in virtually any office setting. Designs will vary. Some will be designed to maximize space. Others will be designed to store a large amount of files. Whatever the specific design, each type is sure to provide for the most common needs of the modern office.

Office furniture has changed enormously from the past. Between the economy, times, and changing technology, a lot has influenced the design of modern office desks.

How will writing desks continue to change in the future? No one can say for sure, but with a several century track record, these adaptable furniture pieces aren't likely to disappear any time soon. Workers will always need a place to sit and work, after all.

As long as there is a need to write, to type, or to have a place to work with a computer then writing desks are a safe bet to continue to be viewed as important office furniture. As anyone who has ever worked without one can tell you: a good office desk can make all the difference.
