Black Hawk Down: Harrowing dramatization of the catastrophic 1993 U.S. mission in Somalia that concluded in the deaths of eighteen American cadets. Characters and partisan structure take a backseat deliberately to the malicious battle scenes, re-made in cruel detail by Scott, cinematographer Slawomir Idziak, and a team of technical magicians. Not for the faint of heart. Cast includes Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor, Tom Sizemore, Eric Bana, William Fichtner, Ron Eldard, and Hugh Dancy. (143 minutes, 2001)

They Only Kill Their Masters: Incredible cast in difficult modem-night whodunit set in coastal California town; tries for Daniel Hammett sensation, doesn't relatively make it. Cop Garner tries to solve slaughter of pregnant female, with formidable Doberman pinscher computing prominently. Not poor, however a disappointment. Cast includes James Garner, Katharine Ross, Hal Holbrook, Harry Guardino, June Allyson, Peter Lawford, and Ann Rutherford. (97 minutes, 1972)

War Of The Worlds: The future of the human race is at stake in this invasion from outer space thriller. The aliens seem to be indestructible. Everyone is simply trying to stay alive, hoping a solution will come.

Black Like Me: Cast includes James Whitmore, Roscoe Lee Browne, Lenka Petersen, Sorrell Booke, Can Geer, Al Freeman, and Raymond Jacques. Hefty tirade based on real history of journalist who took medications that permitted him to pass for black so he might expetience racial prejudice firsthand. Some facets of presentation are un-contemporary, although topics are still well-timed (107 minutes, 1964)

Vantage Point: Shortly after arriving at the global warming summit, U.S. President Ashton is shot. In this unique perspective film, we replay the events from four different vantage points, as we try to figure out what actually happened. Stars Dennis Quaid, Sigourney Weaver, and Forrest Whitaker.

Goodfellas: This movie tells the story of Henry Hill, an Irish-Italian American who grew up around the mafia, becoming involved early on. This movie is based on his true story. His own plight takes him from small time crook, all the way to cocaine dealer and heavy user.

Down Argentine Way: Entertaining 20th Century Fox lyrical with Grable in the film that increased her to stardom dropping in love with slick Argentinean horse breeder Ameche. Miranda is wonderful in her first American film, acting infectious Brazilian melodies with her own band and look out for the Nicholas Brothers, who do a dynamite forte number. Picture postcard color all the way through. Cast includes Don Ameche, Betty Grable, Carmen Miranda, Charlotte Wood, Carrol Naish, Henry Stephenson, and Leonid Kinskey. (90 minutes, 1940)
