The History of Justin Boots

By Dustin Williams

The Justin Boots story began in 1879, when H.J. Justin left Lafayette, Indiana to start a new life in Spanish Fort, Texas. Initially a boot repairman, H.J. soon began his own boot company working out of his home.

The railroad brought a lot of changes to many cities in America, it also brought H.J. out of Spanish Fort to Nocona, Texas where he felt that he had a greater opportunity to work with a bigger market. His wife Annie Justin was right there at his side helping him with the work by making him what is called a 'fit kit', which had an instruction chart and tape measure all for custom fit boots. H.J. was able to hire a sort of traveling sales team that would carry these kits around.

The company name was later changed to H.J. Justin and Sons when H.J.'s two sons came to work for him. Soon his boots were being sold in Canada, Mexico, Cuba, as well as 26 states. H.J. had built up quite the name for himself but soon passed away and his sons moved his company over to Fort Worth, Texas.

John Justin, Jr sought after and acquired the controlling interested in the company in 1948, and he helped the company once again to take off and grow. They later worked with and made a deal with Acme Brick, and combined themselves to make Justin Industries. Soon other companies followed and became part of Justin Industries like Nocona Boot Company, Chippewa Shoe Company, and Tony Lama Boots.

In August of 2000, Justin Boots was purchased by Berkshire Hathaway, managed by Warren Buffet. With strong financial backing, a lasting tradition of quality, and a talented management team, Justin Boots today is stronger than ever.
