What Are the Symptoms of Stress?

By Victor Moldey

Each person is wired to feel some symptoms of stress. An example of stress is, if you are driving and another car suddenly pulls out in from of you, stress is understandable and necessary to help you react faster. There are some types of stress that are not good for you. It can be useful to know the symptoms of stress, so we'll be discussing some of the more common ones in this article.

Your immune system will be compromised by stress if left unchecked. People under a lot of stress will often catch colds, flues, and other random illnesses. Granted, the illnesses themselves cause the symptoms but the lowered immunity, as a result of stress, it what allows them in to begin with. You seem to be catching everything and it's all because of the stress you're going through. While your allergies aren't the result of the stress in your life, stress can make them more severe. You need to reduce stress if you are truly interested in new ways to stay healthy.

Thinking clearly also become difficult when you're stressed out. The more pressure you're under the more difficult it becomes to make those calm and collected decisions you're often called upon to make. And even though your mind may be moving fast, it's actually less efficient because your attention span is lower and your thinking tends to be emotional rather than rational. That's why it's a good idea to put yourself in a more relaxed state when you have something to focus on that demands your full concentration. You definitely don't want to increase your level of stress as a result of bad choices you make while stressed out.

One of the most serious symptoms of stress is substance abuse that we all know has serious consequences. If you get into the habit of drinking or taking a drug, including legal prescription drugs, whenever you feel stressed out, this can easily lead to a habit or a serious addiction. The temptation to drink alcohol and take illegal drugs is admittedly difficult to resist especially during times of unbearable stress but these are not the best solutions - temporary but not the best ones.

If you have been engaging in this potentially fatal behavior, you should immediately seek personal and professional help so that you can take control of your life once again. As you can plainly see stress is different for each person and the symptoms do vary a lot. Allowing stress to get out of control can cause you some real harm physically and emotionally although there are both good and bad stresses. Therefore you should never ignore the signs of stress and you should always work to find effective stress management techniques.
