Benefits and Drawbacks of Satellite TV

By Roger Nathan Jr.

Satellite TV has its benefits through the technology placed in space, 22,000 miles from earth. Many emerging satellite companies designed the satellite to provide direct emitting signals from space, according to earth's rotation continuously to your receiver dish at home of office. It has many benefits, as users have discovered.

The Quality: If compared to cable, picture and sound quality produced cannot be compared with satellite. The reason for this quality is that there is a direct communication between each point: the satellite and the receiver. Wired box does not offer direct signal, because it needs wiring to manage the signal through hills and trees before it arrives at your home which alters it into sound and picture. Quality is being sacrificed for this process.

The Coverage: As long as you can get clear sky view, the signal will surely reaches you directly to the dish which is installed to receive the service. Cable service is not an option in rural areas, because it has to go past remote areas which are unreachable in its network.

Program Variety: The difference in channels that are available to dish users (versus cable users) is stupefying. Subscribers receive hundreds of domestic programs, international programs in other languages, Sirius radio and, in some instances, Internet service. Wired service has not yet found an affordable way to give equally as much.

The clear advantage of satellite communications appears to be the power of its signal. For all its glory, there are some factors, however, that might sway potential customers away from it.

The Dish Placement: Because quality is highly dependent on the receiver's location, you will have to set it up perfectly to avoid obstacles such as trees or hills. Natural elements like bad weather and strong wind may also interrupt the signal.

The Dish's Clunkiness: As the dish definitely stands out, it is very easy to notice installed dish on the side of your house or even on a pole, and will clearly lessen your property value.

The Installation: It is definitely an added cost, because technician may have to climb up onto your house or poles to make sure it points out to the sky, and other services do not need this type of installment.

As compared to the cable customer, satellite TV may come with its own technical privileges. It is basically your decision to get a direct signal or receiving filtered signals through underground cables.
