Why You Should Choose Managed Hosting Over Self-Managed Dedicated Hosting

By Sharmon Shah

It doesn't matter whether you are running a busy website, or many different websites- it is important to choose the right dedicated server package, whether a managed server or unmanaged. The differences are divided by cost and level of service.

Imagine you need to host a number of websites for your business. Web security is foreign to you, as is a web server. Will a self-managed dedicated server really do the job? In this situation you'll be responsible for managing the server and ensuring the websites hosted on it are always online. Unless you are a hosting guru, it's a good guess you won't have much experience with this.

The first thing we mentioned about unmanaged servers was the lower cost. A third party or your server host will be able to provide a managed hosting server. It's definitely cheaper than having a full time employee to do this task for you. You can pay for knowledge and peace of mind rather than a full time employee. That said, if you have a team of techs, you can use their expertise to manage the server for you.

Managed hosting is real peace of mind. I have lost count of how many times I have been called out because of unmanaged dedicated servers going pop in the night. Trust me, the last thing you want to be doing is fixing hardware on Xmas day. Managed hosting gives peace of mind that this kind of thing is sorted for you.

A managed setup lets you concentrate on more pressing matters. Let me tell you, keeping on top of security patches as well as dealing with software updates (which inevitably break things) is a complete pain). A managed server takes away this stress.

Any company cannot afford business. You can't avoid having software or hardware faulting. Speaking from bad experiences, your server will break at the most inconvenient times. Having your service offline either costs you your image or sales. At least if you are paying for a managed dedicated server, you know that with the expertise you are paying for, the problem is going to get fixed as quick as is possible.

Personally, I'd always go for a managed dedicated server, purely for an easy life. If you are managing a business, you need to delegate. So why not let the experts take care of the hard work for you, while you sit back and count the money?
