Networking~Network Terms~Phrases~Keywords~Buzz Words~Words~Terminology Explained~Detailed~Unleashed~For Dummies

By Jenny Marcia Irwin

This should hopefully take you through some common networking terms and explain them.

ADSL - Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. The most popular form of internet connection in the UK

IP Transit - an internet connection provided by a transit provider.

Atom - similar to RSS but is newer and offers a greater range of facilities. Atom is still in development, but catching on. The technology is based on RSS. RSS powers this technology.

Bandwidth refers to information being transfered through an internet connection. This is commonly measured in megabits per second (Mbps) or kilobits per second (Kbps).

Blog - an online journal used by an individual or company to write about their life or services. Blogs are usually updated two or three times a week and are displayed in chronological order.

Broadband is a connection with more speed than a modem. It's a very generic term for an internet connection.

Co-location- where an ISP hosts an individual or company's server or hardware on their behalf.

DHCP - Dynamic Host Configuration protocol distributes IP addresses dynamically to clients on a network.

DNS - Domain Name System, used to translate domain names into IP address, with a DNS server providing the translation service.

Domain name - a 100% unique combination of letters and numbers used to locate a website. They have several parts to them, the first being the actual name like my site and then the second half being the top level domain like .com or . co.uk etc and their parts are always separated by dots.

Ethernet - a standard networking method via a LAN, with varying speeds.

Firewall- used to keep the bad guys out. Provides protection and filtering of certain traffic.

FTP - File transfer protocol, a common method transferring files around the internet quickly and easily.

A host is a computer or client on a network that provides services to other computers or clients on the same network.

HTTP or HyperText Transfer Protocol allows hypertext files to be transfered from the internet. HTTP is commonly known for loading websites.

IMAP is slowly replacing POP for accessing email. Using IMAP an email client program can not only retrieve email but can also manipulate content stored on the server, without having to actually retrieve the messages. So messages can be deleted, have their status changed, multiple mail boxes can be managed, etc.

IPv4 - Internet Protocol version 4, is the most widely used version of the internet protocol. IPv4 has a maximum of four billion IP Numbers (technically 232) but due to the way it was designed this is actually less than that due to some inefficiencies.

IPv6 is slowly coming into play as the replacement for IPv4, allowing for a vast amount more IP addresses.

LAN Local area network, which is normally outlined as being inside the same building or floor of a building.

A network is quite simply when two computers are connected.

Where can you find these services? An transit company would be able to provided these hosting services for a company or individual.
