Search Engine Positioning

By Frank Palani Madan

Search engine positioning is the key towards building a web site that gets customers. A web site that nobody visits is useless, a site that gets just visitors and no paying customers is also useless. The challenge lies in leading internet users who are searching for your products to visit your web site.

Nowadays, the Internet is a great tool for building a customer base, keeping in contact with your customers and as means of advertising. You can offer instantaneous information about your products to millions of users around the globe, if you can get searchers to your site.

For good search engine positioning your site needs to be search engine friendly. Designing a company web site that is search engine friendly is essential. The point is people need to find your web site when searches type in keywords in search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, Altavista, AOL and others.

Once a keyword relating to the products or services that you offer is keyed into a search engine, a direct link to your web site should show up on top of the list or at least on the first page.

Here are a few tips to use search engine positioning techniques to make it to the top of the search engines:

Search engine positioning efforts start with your domain name registration. Do not take the task lightly. Choosing the right domain name for your web site is a very important factor to its success. You want a good web site domain name that will rank high to ensure that the most number of targeted visitors will find your site.

If you have an existing web site, optimize the one that you currently have instead of starting over. It will take time before the search engines will update the information on a new web site, so it is best to use the one that you currently have instead of creating a new one.

Keep in mind who your target audience is and take aim at them. If a searcher types in your product in a search engine and clicks on search, they should immediately have your web site right in front of them. This is not easy to do for most keywords but no matter what products you sell there will be many you can still do this for.

Make sure that your visitors get 'hooked' on your web site. When a search engine shows the link to your web site, their job is done.

What you should do next is to make sure that your visitor will not leave your web site without them trying out your products or services, or at least leaving some information so that you can contact them in the future.

When you do research on your target market, learn about their interests so you can have an idea of what you can offer them in return. Then, link their interests to your products and services.

Do Research for the right keywords. Be clever and persistent when doing keyword and keyword phrases research. You need more than just a few keywords to optimize your site.

Vary the phrases that you use for each page on your web site, this will get you more paying customers as you keep your key words reliant to what you are selling.

Focus on your web sites content. Keep your content fresh. Routinely update your web site's content, the search engines look for this and visitors will come back if they can find something new when browsing through your site. Keeping the content updated is a must. When it comes to information about the products and services do the best you can.

Keep in mind your target market when building your web site. The design itself should include the general theme of the web site. You should also pay attention to smaller details such as color and font style and size. Make your site user-friendly with useful articles and tips that relate to the products you sell.

Use Title and META Tags. Make sure every page of your website has the Title and META Tags filled out with good keywords. The Description and robot .txt attributes are combined with the META tags to tell search engine what results you want. It is good to add a brief description about the page and use appropriate keywords all through the page content. Also use the IMG ALT tags to provide image descriptions, which will help your optimization process.

Following these basic search engine positioning techniques will help you rise to the first page of the search engines and get buyers not just visitors to your site.
