New York Free Public Criminal Records

By Ben Kingsley

The criminal records New York keeps on its archives are used by the local residents to ensure their safety. One's safety is at risk the moment we step out of our homes, thus, checking on the background of the people around us may deem necessary in today's time.

Residents would look into the criminal history of their neighbors, tutors, caretakers, nannies, friends and even relatives to make sure that they are with people who can be trusted. Employers also check on the background of their people to make sure they only have people worthy of their trust. Employers can then avoid any major problems in the company. Local investigators also use the criminal records of New York when they are handling a criminal case.

Making the document open to the public may have benefitted many but those with a criminal history find it hard to go on with their lives. A lot have testified that they did not get a decent job because of their criminal history. Others claimed that they were not treated equally by their peers and colleagues. One way to avoid being mistreated is to seal off the criminal record and this is the option chosen by the many.

If the record is not expunged or sealed off, the public document would show a lot of information about the person involved. A public document would show the personal details of the person on the file. One would find the complete name and the aliases used together with the place and date of the person's birth. The document also contains a description of how the person looks like. The document would not be complete without the details of the crimes that the person has been reported for. One would know when and where the crimes have been committed. Arrest details are also included on the document. The charges and the sentence given are also indicated on the file.

All of the criminal records in the state of New York are archived at the office of the Department of Public Safety under the Division of Criminal Justice Services. Personally going to this office is recommended when requesting for a copy of a criminal arrest record. In order to proceed with the request, one has to provide the basic details of the document being requested and at the same time the personal information of the one who filed the request is also needed. The criminal record is only released if the one who requested it is the person himself or an immediate family. Others would have to secure a special request to access the files of other people. The request can also be sent through mail but this can take a while. If waiting is not an option, the search can be done online.

Doing an online search for a criminal record is faster and convenient. With this, the need to go to any office has been minimized since the search can be done even at the comforts of your own home. Another good thing about conducting the search online is that, there are a lot of websites that even let their users do a search for a criminal arrest records free of any charges.
