The Main Kinds of Personal Injury Suffered in the UK

By David Parkinson

Our health is really the most precious asset we have. Many of us take care to exercise regularly and eat properly so that we can maintain our levels of health and fitness. However, accidents can happen to anyone and they can have a devastating affect on our long term health, especially if the injury also forces us to change our lifestyle because hefty bills or expenses. That is why, if you have been in an accident that wasn't any fault of yours, you should consider speaking to a lawyer and claiming for some compensation. If it is a serious injury, your life could be seriously affected and you family and friends may have to look after you or care for you. Obviously, the most common personal injuries are the result of the most common accidents. By far the most common types of accidents in the UK are traffic accidents.

There are, of course, thousands of road accidents in Britain every year. Over 200,000 people are hurt in a road accident every year, 23,000 of whom are seriously injured. Nearly all the injures are due to collisions and the most common injury, which can be suffered even in a minor accident is whiplash. Whiplash is an injury which is inflicted by the weight of the head and neck being forced forward and backward during a sudden change of speed or direction. It can be very painful and is responsible for many lost work days throughout the year. It can also render the victim almost immobile for a few days. Whilst there can be some quite serious complications in extreme cases, it usually requires rest and possibly some physiotherapy for the victim to recover. Lawyers are very experienced at these sorts of cases and often work on a no win no fee basis.

Accidents are common at work and, strangely, more common in offices than in obviously dangerous workplaces. That is usually because the employer has taken all possible precautions to prevent an accident say, on a building site, or where heavy machinery is involved, because they know the risks. Ironically, more people take time off work because of strains and sprains that happen in offices where people are largely sedentary and not used to heavy lifting. It might seem to colleagues like a trivial matter. Never-the-less, a bad back can still cause extreme pain and discomfort and taking time off work can cost you money.

Other work accidents are caused by carelessness or negligence by employers or those who should know better in the workplace. Slips and falls often happen because of spillage, or people irresponsibly leaving things where they could cause harm. Because the floors in offices are often tiled and polished, falling on them can cause a serious injury. Fractures are common as people try to break their fall and then people are off work for weeks because of something that was entirely avoidable.

Not all injuries are a result of an accident. Some workplace injuries are related to the long term effects of environment or actions. If your office equipment is not suited to you, you my find that you have constant back ache or neck pain because you cannot sit properly at your desk or work station when you work, or you develop a repetitive strain injury because you are expected to regularly use equipment that contorts or strains muscles over a period of time. No matter how big or small the company you work for, it is subject to health and safety legislation, and a lawyer will be able to advise you about what is required.

As well as workplace injuries, there are also workplace illnesses. I am sure many will have heard of illnesses associated with asbestos or mining. These cases often involve hundreds of people and have been contracted over many years. There are set laws about these kinds of injuries, but a specialist lawyer is often required to proceed with the case. Attributing blame for an illness that could go back many years is often difficult, especially if the employer disputes it. But a good lawyer will be able to fight for compensation for the victims, who are often disabled by these workplace illnesses.

There is a huge number of kinds of personal injury, and as our lives change, more will develop. However, the cause of personal injury will remain the same: that you have been injured in an accident or circumstance which was the fault of someone else's negligence or carelessness. These injuries are often serious enough to affect the way you live your life at least temporarily and sometimes permanently. What is more, they will have an impact on your family and loved ones. Sometimes you need to claim compensation so that you can get back onto your feet and get your life back. In which case you should speak to a Glasgow lawyer.
