Stepping out of the Brown Box

By Jim Thorpe

As a society, we don't use environmentally friendly packaging very often, and that is a problem for our world. There are two major problems with them that make them difficult for everyone to be okay with.

Creative design means less efficient use of materials. Less efficient use of materials means tearing our environment apart and leaving the scraps to fill a gaping wound in Mother Earth.

Parents are packaging and wrapping Christmas presents to be safely tucked under the tree until the twenty-fifth. This post will take you through a new idea on how to package each of these items.

International packages are notorious for being broken into, especially when sending expensive products or tasty candy. Some packages never make it through customs.

It is an important consideration when making a decision on where to buy your materials from. This age has brought better quality items that last forever.

They also impede the growth of larger plants like trees. How can they dig their roots deep into the earth for water if they hit a garbage dump that offers them no strength, water or nutrients, all things the tree needs to survive?

We hinder the rebirth of our world when we don't use environmentally friendly packaging. It's a major problem, and we have yet to fully resolve it.

These people, if not God-fearing, are superstitious. They would break into a package sent from the President of the United States, but they wouldn't dare touch a package that looked like it was sent for or from a priest. Beat them out their own game. Be creative with your packaging solutions to make it look religious. This idea works best when sending pictures to missionaries in the field. Next, when you're sending things around the country, ditch the traditional box + tape + address combo.

Most packaging services will offer you set box sizes that are non-adjustable. Due to the way their processes work, packaging services generally have to stick to certain sizes in order to maintain a certain price structure. If you need other sizes, most can either special order for a hiked up price or direct you elsewhere. Since their prices are usually cheaper, businesses are usually willing to compromise by purchasing a standard-sized box and filling it with fluff material to take up the extra space.

This means that a lot of extra material is being processed, used and thrown away. On a large production scale, hundreds of tons of wasted materials are thrown away every year, simply because the boxes were too large. Large amounts of harmful chemicals are also released into the air. Luckily, things are improving quickly in the packaging world.

This isn't the first time that nature's products have been used to solve this problem. Other food products have been the base for environmentally friendly packaging.

These kinds of presents don't always stack very well, but they are a fun alternative to traditional packaging solutions. Step outside the box and look for a cylinder this Christmas season. Everyone else's boxes are brown and boring. Take a creative approach to finding packaging solutions this year.
