College is one of the most common American dreams on the path to success. Getting there is only half the battle. Once there you will find that it is a whole new way of life where you must learn self discipline and the art of choosing wisely. This article can help you do just that and to avoid some of the pitfalls that all too many students fall into.

If there is a subject that you really excel in, tutor others in your dorm or in your classes. You can earn a little extra money, and tutoring is a productive way to spend your time. In addition, tutoring looks great on a resume. It is important that you take every opportunity to build up your experiences before you graduate.

Get involved with social activities that keep you engaged. All work and no play can be just as bad for you as too much socializing. Find that balance, and discover groups and clubs that have similar interests to you. You'll find you are a better student when you have these outlets.

Fill out your FAFSA as soon as possible. Federal student aid is dispersed on a first come basis, so putting off your application can actually cost you money. Get it in as soon as you are able to, and avoid the stress of gathering all the required information at the last minute.

Start collecting coupons. You don't have to be an extreme couponer, like those that you may have seen on television, but by clipping a few each week and paying attention to weekly grocery sales, the money that you save can add up. Also, if you have a superstore in your area with a grocery department, go there. The products are generally much less expensive.

When you are writing a paper for your class, make sure that you do not believe everything that you come across on the web. Sometimes, the information that you read is opinion based and not factual, as you can get docked a lot of points for not having information that is accurate.

When you are staying in a dorm, buy a safe to lock up your valuables. The last thing that you want is someone to steal something that is valuable to you. Typically, dorms have minimal security and people walking in and out all the time, so it is best to error on the side of caution.

Don't start right out thinking you're going to carry a full course load and work part time or full time as well. Just take classed during your first semester and see how it goes. If you find yourself with lots of free time on your hands (highly unlikely) you can consider getting a job in your second semester. It's smart to determine how heavy your load of coursework will be before making any other commitments.

When you are assigned a paper to write, be sure to allow yourself plenty of time. You do not want to have to rush through it. Turning it in on time is just as important as the content in it. Start planning as soon as you are given the assignment.

As soon after class as possible recopy your notes. Any review you do should be done very quickly after class and then again a few days later. Typing your notes is highly recommended because it will help you learn and organize the material. It will also be easier to review them before tests if they are neatly typed and organized. Additionally, it's easier to participate in study groups and share your information if it's in a format others can decipher!

Make sure you study what you are having the most difficult time with first. If you save it for last, you will be more fatigued and less likely to retain the information. It will make studying much more difficult for you. Save the subjects that come easiest to you for last.

Don't be afraid to share your knowledge with others. Education is not a competition. Your classmates may really need your help. And know, this will come back to you as well. When you are in need, you'll find the people you've helped to be ready to help you in return.

Find at least three study spots that work for you. One is likely going to be a comfortable corner of your dorm room. However, you also need at least another indoors one in another building, as well as an outside one. If you study in the same spot every day, you will either go crazy or stop studying.
