For A Happy, Healthy English Mastiff Breeders In PA Will Be Able To Assist

By Patrice McCoy

English Mastiff breeders in PA will enjoy sharing information with you about their dogs. After a period of being out of favor, there is now a lot of interest in this noble breed. Although the most massive of all dogs, it has a gentle disposition. The Irish Wolfhound and Great Dane are taller but not as big in the body.

The head and body are both massive. The head is rather square in shape with floppy flews. The wide chest forces the front legs well apart and the body is deep and broad. Males reach a maximum of 250 pounds while females weigh up to 200 pounds. The vast majority have close-fitting, short coats. Occasionally one appears with long hair.

Colors range from a pale apricot to a dark brindle. In between is a deep, rich red, and silver or golden yellow fawn. Dark shading can make the shoulders and back appear very dark. A black mask is a distinguishing feature which all English mastiffs have. Their size and bulk make them unsuitable for city apartments and they are much more suited to country or suburban living.

Pennsylvanian breeders will be keen to advance the reputation of their dogs and will have had breeding animals tested for those genetic diseases which may occur. Hip and elbow dysplasia are two of these. Thyroid problems and progressive retinal atrophy are others. As with many large dogs, English mastiffs can suffer from gastric torsion. Rather than being offered one large meal a day, they should be given two or three small meals daily. The lifespan varies from seven to ten or eleven years.

Because of their size, these dogs are naturally intimidating to many. They do not need to be taught to guard but will instinctively protect their family and property. They are not inherently aggressive and are more likely to hold a person at bay rather than attack. They should be well-trained and socialized while young. The breed is good with children although they can be hard to train. They are a massive, powerful dog and it is important that they are obedient. It is a sensible precaution to keep them leashed in public.

Snoring, drooling and wheezing are some of the less pleasant characteristics of this breed. They are average shedders and just need brushing from time to time. Frequent bathing is not recommended as the natural oils are removed. This can lead to skin conditions. Although they may not look for too much exercise, a regular walk keeps them healthy and lessens a tendency towards obesity.

Mastiffs were once used in sports such as dog-fighting, and bull- and bear-baiting. Its uses today include guarding and watchdog duties. Military and police units employ its talents in various ways including search and rescue.

If you should purchase a puppy, it is important to limit the amount of running it does until it is two years of age or more. It needs soft bedding to avoid the formation of calluses and arthritis. English Mastiff breeders in PA will be pleased to introduce their dogs to you and will enjoy sharing information about them.
