Asset Maintenance Management: Asset Management Journal Guide

By Arthur Crandal

It has been estimated that between 50 to 90% of all asset management system software implementations fail. Software implementations are notoriously difficult but the question that should be asked is why?According to a recent story a county government walked away after spending $30 million dollars for an asset management software implementation after an independent consulting firm concluded that fixing the problems with the implementation was not worth the cost. The funny thing about it was that no one wanted to take responsibility for the disaster. The county blamed the well known consulting company hired to oversee the project, the consulting company blamed the client and the software vendor took the position that they had nothing to do with it. In actuality, they are all equally to blame. More importantly, the software vendor and 3rd party consulting company have damaged themselves as credible institutions because they failed to set adequate customer expectations. Failure to realize that the setting of customer expectations before a project begins as well as adjusting them during the course of the implementation will almost always spell doom.

Software companies invest in making Enterprise Asset Management software for the simple reason that it is more effective than manual management. Keeping track of asset health is something that is best done using software since any abnormalities indicating deteriorating asset health are quickly and timely noted. It is this keeping of equipment in good running condition that ensures their reliability and safety- key factors in any facility. EAM software is what you would term as having a broad spectrum- the nature of its development means it can be used across departments, facilities and even locations. Between locations means shifting the network to an online platform to bridge the geographical gap that is created.

With the emphasis made on asset management, one would be tempted to think that EAM Software is limited to the aforementioned function. But truth is it does a lot more than that. Expectations banked on a CMMS system stretch far beyond the operations surrounding asset management. But the maintenance aspect is the most desired one. Subsidiary functions include risk management, strategic planning, creating work orders to better the efficiency and productivity of your staff.

Professional asset managers are also required to fix emergency problems arising due to unanticipated reduction in production capacity or a major break down in plants machinery, etc. the training received by them during their learning and skills learnt through experience facilitates a asset manager to handle every job diligently. Regular maintenance of assets ensures an adequate potential of asset manager while, recovering quickly from unpredicted adverse situation test the actual capability of asset management in a company.

Successful implementations leave the customer happy with the value of what they paid for. Vendors wanting to grow should not plan to meet customer expectations, they should be planning to exceed them even if they make use of a 3rd party for the implementation. The customer is always King, exceeding customer expectations makes it a lot easier to keep customers and sell new ones.
