How is the Hong Kong Educational Situation?

By David Chan

Every year, there are two public exams for secondary school students in Hong Kong, which are the HKALE and HKCEE. They are held in March to May. This system runs for more than thirty years. But, can students really get something form it?

Some students blame that these exams bring them great pressure. Some students think that they cannot show all their talents because these public exams only focus on their academic results. Some elders claim that attaining public exams is a great experience for students.

It seems that the Hong Kong educational system cannot fulfill people wants. Firstly, the system is too examination-orientated. In current educational system, primary school students need good academic result to enter a good or EMI secondary school; secondary school students need to use their public examination result to enter a good university,

Besides, in recent years, the educational system shift to a more interactive way which require students to do many group projects, study outside classroom, presentation, etc. No matter students pay how many efforts on these activities, academic result is still the main course of our educational system.

We can see that, actually, there is a contradiction. On one hard, people want the next generation become an all-rounder. On the other hand, people, including employers and university interviewers, usually only focus on the examination result of students.

However, referring to the exam result only is not a suitable method to identify smart students and stupid students. Recently, employers complain that gradates from university cannot do well enough in their work. This situation shows that sense of responsibility and communication skills cannot be checked in exam.

Study is needed because students want to learn and want to be equipped for a bright future. The goal of education should not be a short-term one. However, students only want to get As in exams. As a result, students cannot have a happy school life and the goal of education cannot be achieved.

Correcting people mind is the first step to improve the Hong Kong educational system. People should want a all-rounder than a high mark scorer. As a result, our society can be developed in all aspect but not only one aspect.
