Sexual Harassment Regarding Sexual Orientation

By Franklin Skribbit

The workplace has the potential to be a great place to make friends and learn to work well with other people. No matter where you work, you should be able to enjoy the time you are spending there and work productively.

Delete the Dirt

Be Smart

One of the most effective ways to prevent a breach of your privacy is to simply think things through. If you happen to be carrying health information with you, make sure you always know where it is and keep it out of sight (in a purse or backpack) when you're not using it. Additionally, only access your medial information for valid reasons like treatment, care, and billing.

Keep it Classy

One particular form of sexual harassment that is becoming more prevalent, and is extremely detrimental is sexual harassment based on sexual orientation. This is the harassment of individuals based on their sexual preference or orientation. This kind of harassment is never acceptable and has absolutely no place in the office.

For instance, make sure to choose complex passwords and never share them with others. While you may trust the person, you cannot trust their ability to be adequately careful. Also be sure to always log out of your email when you're done using it, and never let others use the computer without your supervision if you are still logged on.

Often, it can be intimidating to approach a supervisor about such a private matter, but it is important that it be done because otherwise a change would be difficult to make. When a problem is ignored, it can only grow, and cannot be remedied. As management, it is important to help your employees understand the serious nature of sexual harassment. It is not a joke, not for fun, and not something to be shrugged off.

For individuals searching for employment in fields where professionalism is tantamount, like the legal or medical professions, it may be wise for you to look for and participate in an industry specific code of conduct training. Doing this will enable you to familiarize yourself with the specific rules of interacting on social media for that industry.

With appropriate harassment training, each employee can be aware of what is and is not appropriate in the workplace, and how to properly approach an inappropriate situation. Keeping the workplace a safe and happy environment is one of the most important parts of a successful and productive environment. When employees feel comfortable in their office, they are more likely to produce more and often better work.
