Ideal Social Bookmarking Methods for Business Growth

By Dennis Checkowish

For the past several years the rise of social bookmarking as a flexible tool for SEO and marketing has had a huge impact in IM. Bookmarking is seriously in use by online marketers for obtaining backlinks and more traffic. But you really should not neglect or overlook what could be done for the more long-term approaches at high PR bookmarking sites. It basically is a matter of your particular business goals and perhaps what is attractive to you. Yes, bookmarks can be stored in your account at bookmarking sites, even though they have become social centers for lots of people. You can designate tags (keywords) to your bookmarks, and that actually has SEO benefits but a great deal depends on the particular site.

Google took a lot of the power out of high PR bookmarking sites when it seemed they (perhaps) let the various sites know that their dofollow link properties were causing issues. Places like Technorati and Digg, plus a few others, were able to dominate the first pages of SERPS in Google due to their high PR status. Naturally, I make conjecture about any impact Google had with those modifying their links to nofollow. But I would not be surprised if that happened.

But you can gain exposure when you take a more responsible approach to using social bookmarking sites. What can cause issues with so many profiles for backlinking is those profiles are not properly written or anything similar to high quality. What you can do is simply create better profiles that at least look like they're for real. More normal, non-spammy, profiles will not be deleted by the human reviewers - and that is why it's smart to do it like that. This really is the best way to go for many reasons, and you will have the opportunity to use them for powerful bookmarking for a long time.

When you do build a useful profile with content material, then of course you can produce an RSS feed from that. You can promote your RSS feed at other places and RSS directories. Then what you can do is work in your links and other related content. But you do have to take care and exercise caution so you aren't over-promoting because that could cause loss of subscribers to your feed.

Just look at your feeds, and you will know when you are going too far with promotional links, etc. Another important aspect is to take time and build relationships at these bookmark sites. You can take a few minutes each day to distribute your good will at these sites, and that will not take very long plus it is a good investment decision.

Ultimately, how you approach using bookmarking sites in your own business is your call. Most people tend to just use them for backlinking, and it does seem that the approach outlined above is not applied by so many people. Maybe you can try it at just one strong bookmarking site and see how you like the results.
