BTEC Teaching Assistant Course

By James Halliday

It is still possible to get a job as a teaching assistant without any formal qualifications, but more and more schools are insisting that the staff they take on have a Teaching Assistant qualification. Many schools are also asking their existing un-qualified teaching assistants to go out and get the relevant qualification. They want to be able to prove easily and quickly that the people teaching and working in their school are qualified and can teach to a high standard. As a result getting a Teaching Assistant qualification before you start your job search makes a lot of sense.

If you complete the BTEC Teaching Assistant course, you will be able to demonstrate that you have all the skills you need t become a teaching assistant. It is recognised within the industry as a high-quality qualification, and will help you to stand out from amongst the other candidates. The course can be completed at home in about 180 hours. Coursework and support is available on-line, should you need it you can also get support via the phone.

To complete the BTEC course you need to be literate and numerate and be committed to completing the course. Much of what you will learn is common sense, especially if you are already a mother, but you must be able to articulate your knowledge and adapt it to the classroom environment.

During the teaching assistant course, you will learn to provide day-to-day support for teaching staff and children. This support includes preparing lesson plans, delivering elements of that lesson plan and evaluating how well the children have learnt the contents of that lesson plan.

As a teaching assistant working with members of the public, you need to be aware of health and safety laws and several other areas of the law. The BTEC teaching assistant course will teach you about the areas of the law you need to be aware of and what your responsibilities are.

To qualify to take the BTEC course you need to hold GCSEs or a GNVQ Foundation certificate or a NVQ1 qualification. You also need to be aged over 16.
