With Proper SAT Prep Palm Beach Students Will Obtain Higher Scores

By Janine Hughes

Each year thousands of students approach their college admission tests with a mixture of trepidation, hope and high expectations. They have good reason to be a little bit stressed. After all, their places in the best colleges may very well depend upon the scores they achieve during these tests. By starting early with serious SAT prep Palm Beach FL students can be more confident about their chances for success.

It is true that there are some colleges that do not require applicants to submit their test scores. It is common knowledge, however, that all the better colleges where places are coveted will not even consider an applicant that not only sat for the tests but that also earned very high scores. A qualification from a good college can be a determining factor for employers and serious students are therefore also serious about these tests.

Scores obtained in the admission test are certainly important but students need to understand that admission also depends upon several other factors. High school grades are also very important and many eminent colleges even require prospective students to submit a CV showing that they were involved in community work, sport and cultural activities. They want well rounded students that are active within their own environments.

These tests essentially evaluate the ability of students in three distinct areas, namely mathematics, writing and critical reading. It does not test logic or aptitude, nor does it test critical thinking or problem solving abilities. The three areas that are tested are considered to be critical for success in a higher educational situation. The entire test takes three and three quarters of an hour to complete, with short breaks between each area of testing.

The College Board, a US not for profit organization, owns and administers the tests. Apart from the standard test, they also offer students the opportunity to sit for additional Subject Tests. These tests measure their proficiency in very specific subjects. Doing well in Subject Tests can earn students credits at most colleges. Some colleges even require applicants to sit for specific tests prior to admission.

Ordinarily, students sit for their tests during their senior year in high school. However, those that truly want to score well often sit for the test during their junior year. Many students see this as a sort of practice run to see how it works. If they do not obtain the scores that they hoped for, they can always do the test again in their senior year.

Many students start their preparations early. They buy study guides, attend special courses and they enrol for online tutoring sessions. The College Board maintains that the guidelines that they issue are sufficient to prepare for the tests but there are still numerous vendors offering better results and more efficient preparations. Students and their parents should be careful to use only reputable vendors, preferably only those that are underwritten by experts and educational authorities.

Good SAT scores can indeed be very important to the future of those that will be pursuing a college degree. High scores require hard work, dedication and a strong will to succeed. Admission to a good college will definitely make all the hard work worthwhile.
