Reducing Your Restaurant Construction Costs

By Maryanne Goff

Starting a restaurant business is no different to starting any other venture. Make no mistake, the venture is usually quite pricey as well as exciting. Therefore, underneath the excitement, there is probably concern about restaurant construction costs. However, by being smart you can save a lot of money.

If you decide to do the building yourself then you'll save a lot of cash. However, make sure you know what you're doing, and make sure you have experienced laborers around you. One thing you really don't want to do is damage you brand by cutting corners on things that are essential to make the establishment look good.

By using fake materials you can make your establishment look more expensive than it actually is. For example, instead of using antique pine for the decor, you could use a cheaper wood that can be finished off to look like antique pine. The same can be said for flooring. Using a cheaper vinyl flooring, one that looks like hard wood flooring, will save a lot of money and customers may not know the difference.

If you know very little about the building trade then you'll need to choose a contractor wisely. Some have a habit of going over their budget on a regular basis, while some do not have the experience of dealing with commercial property. Try and go for one with a reputation for doing things on time and on budget and with experience in your particular field.

By buying all fixtures and fittings directly from the manufacturers you save on the cost of having to buy them from retail outlets. They might even provide a discount if you're buying in bulk. As a trade customer you'll usually have to pay much less than a retail customer. In the event that the manufacturer does not allow this, go directly to a wholesaler and don't forget to ask for a discount.

Try not to use middle men when buying merchandise. They will eat into your profit margins and the services they provide might not justify their use. If you've little choice but to use one, then establish exactly how much everything will cost before you cut a deal.

When designing or building the premises, bear in mind that space should be utilized efficiently. Try to cut out things that use too much space unnecessarily. Conversely, don't try to save space when it means compromising your brand. This will all depend on the type of restaurant and type of clientele you wish to attract.

It's vital to explore all aspects of restaurant construction costs when building a new premises. Think about how the building will affect the brand as a whole and how it will fit in with the image the brand already has. Saving money is important, but maybe not at the expense of your reputation.
