Florida Public Arrest Records

By Claire Dowell

Florida arrests records are important documents that may contain information about the number of arrests of a specific person. Criminal history information is readily available upon request however some information are kept confidential (sealed information) that can only be given to authorized agencies.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement or FDLE keeps the records of arrest. They have a more detailed record containing expunged criminal history and even juvenile criminal history. However the expunged criminal history is only available for specific agencies or special requests. The juvenile criminal history on the other hand can only be released if the offense done by said individual can be considered as a felony if he was of age. The FDLE also houses other important records that can't be found in the NBI.

The records can be used for various purposes. Most people use them as a personal reference. Other uses them as a supporting document when trying to obtain other documentation such as licenses. In some counties in Florida, you need the record when applying for a license to own guns or even just a driver's license. The record is also an important document needed for application of passports and visas. Companies may also use said records as documents to support background checks when hiring prospective employees or during investigations. There are different types of background checks pertaining to the records of arrests. The first one is Level 1 that refers to the name and employment history check. Level 2 produces a more detailed record of past offenses. Once the records are obtained, they can only be used and shared to same agencies. This means that if the records were obtained by district schools then only fellow district schools may use it, not another agency type.

You can easily get your own records from the Florida department of law enforcement. Just bring a valid ID and the required fees to request your records. Background checks depend on the type. Level 1 checks will just need your full name and other important details such as height, age etc. Level two background check will require fingerprints to be checked in the database.

Obtaining the records may cost you depending on what you need. A standard check of arrest records will cost a total of $24.50. Obtaining records for licenses like a gun license will cost $31.50. For other purposes that require high security checks may cost about $40.50 dollars. Rechecking or renewing the record will incur the same fees.

Police arrest records are dynamic and can change every day. This means that the record you obtained now may be obsolete by tomorrow as new arrests and other incidents may have been added. That's why online searches of the records are essential so that you won't be wasting time going to the FDLE.
