Photo Backdrops 101 For Photography Newbies

By Anne Farrell

Utilizing backdrops for photographs are a fantastic way to change the mood of the photograph and add some life to an otherwise boring background. Backdrops also provide an impression of professionalism and complexity to a photograph and utilizing one can help adjust the color tone and lighting of a photograph. Some backdrops are even so natural that you can't tell if it's a backdrop or not.

Employing the use of backdrops at photography sessions is a brilliant way of adding some flair to an otherwise tedious photography studio background. Backdrops also add a touch of sophistication and an image of professionalism to photographs as well as aesthetically enhance the overall quality of the photograph. Backdrops could also give the illusion that the person is standing in front of a real scene and not in front of a mere fabric.

1. Paper. Some studios use plain or printed paper which could be bought by rolls or by the yard at hardware shops. The problem with paper, even though readily available, is that it creases and tears easily as well. It is amazingly cheap though and photography and videography studios can make do with it for DIY sets and productions.

2. Muslin Backgrounds. Muslin has been used for over three centuries since it was discovered in Bangladesh during the 17th century. Back then, the fabric was used for intricate dresses for high society functions and events of the elite. Nowadays, muslin has found a multiplicity of functions in photography and videography. It is widely used as a background as it is easy to color and drapes beautifully on top of any exterior.

3. Faux Wood Floors. Ever thought about why most photographs have beautiful furnished wood parquet flooring? Well, the thing is, not all studios have magnificent floors and the staff have to modify the set to give the illusion that is desired in the photograph. Faux wood floorings are sometimes utilised and installed on the ground which apparently, can also double up as a wall background especially for vintage-looking pictures.
