Steps to using Wordpress to build your first website

By Mitch Desjarlais

In the following article, you'll be learning how to build your very first website while using the famous WordPress platform.

Before we begin you will need to install WordPress on your hosting account. Most hosting companies provide a quick and simply way to install WordPress using Fantastico. It only takes 2 minutes to install and it is done automatically. If you want to install WordPress yourself you will need FTP access to your server, a FTP upload program like WINWCP or SmartFTP and your chosen browser (Firefox or Internet Explorer)

Once the install is complete, you can start by logging into the admin panel (a.k.a. back end) of your new site. Simply visit your website's login area by entering "wp-admin" after your domain name. Example, www.example.com/wp-admin. You can now login to WordPress using the username and password you supplied during the install.

You will then see what is called the "Dashboard", which is the main administration screen. This section is accessible only by the administrator(s) of the website. In other words, if you would like to modify your website's contact info, about company text or any other pages, you can do this by getting into the admin panel of your website. There are different areas for you to visit in the diverse menu items located on the left-hand navigation bar. They are:

- Dashboard - Posts - Media - Links - Pages - Comments - Appearance - Plugins - Users - Tools - Settings

A quick way to change the design (graphics) of your site is by going to the Appearance section using different themes (templates). You can download and install free or premium themes via the Appearance - Themes area. All themes can be modified to fit your needs. You can modify the graphics using programs as like Adobe Photoshop, Fireworks, Illustrator and customize the layouts of your chosen theme by using a WYSIWYG editor like Adobe Dreamweaver.

WordPress comes equipped with a multitude of plugins, too. These plugins, also known as add-ons or extensions are software scripts that add functions and events to your website. Most plugins are fairly simple to install via the WordPress Admin Plugin Screen and are generally used to add some simple organization to your posts and categories.
