Embroidery: First Things First, Digitizing Logos

By Dean Zellman

Machines process most embroidery projects, but for that to happen the logo or design needs to be converted to a embroidery machine readable file. The process of making this conversion is termed, digitizing.

What is digitizing?

Specialized software is utilized to create a digital computer file from logo or design artwork. This file is loaded into the embroidery machine and directs the embroidery process. These files carry the instructions to stitch the image as well as guarantee consistent quality throughout the process. Some names that this file is called are stitch file, embroidery tape and also embroidery file. It is this computer file that allows the embroidery machine to create the actual embroidery.

How are logos created?

Most people do not realize the amount of complexity that is involved in digitizing images. In fact an embroiderer or digitizer may think of themselves as more of an artist than a technician. Although the process may begin with simply scanning the artwork into a computer, it also will involve the digitizer specifying where the stitches are sewn and also the order in which they are sewn.

The quality of the final embroidery is dependent on the quality of the digitized file. Obviously, it is paramount that a high quality digitized file be created. Not all images can be easily digitized. Also, different embroidery machines often require different file formats. If you plan on providing your embroiderer with a digitized file, make sure to find out first what file format his machines support. Such computer applications as Adobe Photoshop and Corel Draw can be used in an intermediate step to increase the quality of the final digitized file. Some digitizers won't mind even starting with a hand drawn image and digitizing that. One of the most common computer programs used for digitizing is DST by Tajima. Many embroidery machines will accept the DST file format.

Completing Digitized Logos

When the design has been digitized, it can still be edited by other computer programs to improve the quality even further. These programs allow the digitized image to be modified and also additional images created. The colors can be changed and even accompanied text added. Special effects may also be added to enhance the image, such as 3D shadows. The digitizer can also add or remove individual stitches to improve the finished product.
