What Are An Undertaker's Responsibilities In A Funeral Service

By Anton Alvarez

Undertakers are also referred to as funeral directors and after the family of the deceased and the clergy, they are the most significant persons to take care of the funeral service. These people manage the arrangements of the funeral, straight from the start till the end. The task of undertakers is such that they have to be on call anytime of the day and on any day of the year.

In the wake of such a great loss, the bereaved family may not be able to take fast decisions regarding the service and ultimate disposition of the body. This is where the undertaker steps in and takes over. He assists you in deciding the time, venue and type of the funeral rites and services for the dead. Besides, the undertaker helps you to confront the loss that has befallen you, by remaining at your side and taking care of every aspect of the funeral service, which enables you to show the deep regard and love you have in your heart for the deceased.

Preparation of a funeral service starts with deciding upon its time, place and date and then informing the same to relatives and friends. Once this is finalised, the undertaker helps you in bringing the deceased to the funeral site or to the venue where he or she is to be finally laid to rest. In the event of burial of the body, the undertaker helps in selecting the appropriate casket for the deceased.

In Addition to this, the undertaker also helps in planning the funeral service, including selecting florists, flowers, church, arranging for transport, food, clergy, music, copies of script of hymns, headstone and ashes. All arrangements are made by the undertaker after discussing it with the family to make sure that the dead person is truly treated with regard.

Finally, some undertakers also help in proper embalming and transportation of the body if needed, and in preparation and arranging for the funeral service in another nation if the person has died abroad.
