Good Attributes To Look For In Security Officers

By Belinda Norbert

The security officer owns the difficult task of protecting people, commercial or residential properties and valuables. This professional watchman must meet all basic qualifications imposed by employers. Security officers must be not less than 18 years old and have a high school diploma or the equivalent General Educational Development (GED) tests. There are also other qualities aside from age and educational credentials.

Training for security officers is mandatory although a college degree is not necessary. Candidates for security officers need the appropriate training as an assurance that these people will not be liabilities to clients. Guards should be proficient in emergency operations, search and seizure techniques, safety, primary first-aid, and crisis prevention. Extra detailed training consisting of terrorism responsiveness, crowd safety execution and firearm use may also be imposed.

The qualified security officer must have a spotless criminal background. Most places require security guard licenses or guard cards before you can be engaged. State governments compel candidates to go through fingerprint checks and complete the criminal background affirmation before getting licenses. Companies can also put into practice criminal background assessments prior to hiring security officers.

Guards should have applicable work experience in security operations and a little about law enforcement. This experience is proof of know-how in the proper handling and use of selected guns. The security officer must also know how to prepare and record incident reports. The person would need to be in sound psychological and physical shape. Applicants are instructed to proceed through medical examinations to determine bodily fitness levels.

The security officer must have a pleasant character and effective customer service along with communications flair. Driver's licenses issued by the government may also be required if the guard is assigned in mobile patrol. The officer should look smart and neat in uniform with well-polished shoes. Cleanliness is also a requirement. The officer must be vigilant and remain visible at all times when in duty.

The capacity to read and write well is obligatory. These abilities can spell a significant difference in the course of coping with other people. Command presence and confidence is also essential because security officers are assigned to deal with diverse classes of people. The guard needs to be knowledgeable about fundamental criminal legislation and penal rules which are applicable to the location where the security officer is working. Avoidance of criminal acts is the primary responsibility of security officers so alertness is a necessary trait that you need to take up.
