Yahoo's Potential Impact On Tumblr, Seen By A Collections Company

By Rob Sutter

Tumblr has become an interesting case for me every time I log in. I seem to go into every day looking into the site, anticipating some kind of drastic change that will impact the entire structure of it. Reblogging should be fun but who's to say how this will change in the future thanks to Yahoo's ownership of it? If the changes became so great that they would actually wind up hindering experiences, who knows what kind of impact a collections company could have in the long run?

YouTube is one of the examples of sociable g sites in which the features are free; Tumblr is no different. People log into this website, creating one blog after another while making friends with others who share their interests. This can all be done without cracking open your wallet for the sake of a supposed mandatory subscription fee. That being said, I have to wonder what will happen if Tumblr starts to institute ads which become so noticeable that they start to irritate the user base?

I don't know about anyone else but when I'm watching a minute-long clip on YouTube, I shouldn't have to watch a thirty-second ad beforehand. I understand that these are needed in order to bring revenue to those who create unique content but there should be a minimum length of video. For example, I could see such an ad placed on a video that goes on for about ten minutes. However, if the clip in question is shorter than the product plug, I think that it's a bit of a problem.

What if there were fees placed on the website, seemingly out of nowhere? I can only imagine how much commotion there would be amongst members of the Tumblr audience once that news came about. This is the sort of situation that I cannot find anyone supporting, whether you're talking about the general public or those belonging to a reputable collections company. I can only hope that such firms as Rapid Recovery would take notice of this kind of circumstance and listen to what the public would have to say.

Hopefully my concerns are wrong and that Tumblr remains untouched. To me, it's the kind of website that anyone can get into and you can put as much effort into it as you please. If you want to solely reblog, you can go about such an action; the same can be said about those who want to create more unique content. With Yahoo now in control of the site, though, one has to wonder what will happen in the future because of this level of ownership.
