Safer Traffic within Your Business Campus

By Jessie Mccafferty

Corporate campuses, especially large ones with dozens of buildings, are busy places with workers coming and going at all hours on foot and in cars. There may also be a large amount of bicycle traffic, especially on campuses of corporations that take pride in being green and environmentally friendly. The foot and bike traffic in close proximity to vehicular traffic may cause some issues of safety. Addressing these issues makes everyone safer.

By employing devices like lit signs on your company campus, you're helping to regulate traffic speeds and prevent accidents. Safety is the #1 emphasis of traffic calming efforts. Vehicles that are moving slower are less certain to be involved in accidents. If they are the slower speeds help forestall more extreme injuries to pedestrians.

Another benefit is less congestion and less non-accident traffic problems. Many stop signs have a tendency to cause drivers to speed up between them to save some time, or to roll through them. Speed bumps could cause drivers to swerve to avoid them, or they can halt traffic while drivers try to avoid damaging their cars. These can end up in backups and congestion, and general frustration.

Instead of using too many stop signs, speed bumps or diversion devices to funnel traffic, Dynamic speed signs use feedback to slow traffic and make drivers more mindful of their environment. This helps naturally calm the flow of traffic and prevent congestion.

Many issues of safety arise that aren't directly related to traffic accidents when you are considering traffic calming, too. The utilisation of some devices like speed bumps could actually make it much harder for an ambulance or fire truck to get thru the streets on your company campus.

If an employee becomes unexpectedly and severely ill, an ambulance could take twice the length to reach her if it must drive over speed bumps. A fire can have twice the length to spread and do damage because a fire truck could take twice the length to navigate those bumps. Using signs instead keeps the streets open while still controlling traffic speeds.
