Sample Resumes - Helping You Compose Your Own

By Greg Tilley

A composition that really needs to be a masterpiece is a resume and this is true if you expect to get the jobs that you want. You can compare this to a musical composition because in a way, it will change throughout your life in tone and in content and it is also based on the music (or in this case sample resumes) that have influenced and shaped that way you view life and music (or resumes).

Most of the learning that we do in this life is by way of imitation. We learn to walk faster if we have older children walking around us. Playing basketball better is what we learn to do if we are playing with people that possess more skills than us. Because it takes a very special person to have the ability to form new thoughts and ideas about something and in general it takes too long, which is why we would often learn by imitation. This is why there are things like a sample resume that help us to find the basic form, structure, and objective which we will use to compose our own.

The analogy breaks down because resumes are not expected to be original in form, content, or organization of the information contained therein. Being able to give the potential employer a quick, concise, but very accurate representation of who you are is what you are expected to do. This would mean that instead of the information that you get help with in a sample resume, it is the form that is to be similar.

Where exactly do you find a sample resume? Many people claim that they can find these samples online and there are quality examples to be found there. But there are a lot of them on the Internet which is why finding them could be a problem and most are lacking in quality that is necessary to avoid being weeded out of an application pool. There is an alternative source that you can try and that is anyone that you know that is an employer with experience in hiring employes. This may be a family member, or a friend, or a former employer, it doesn't matter as long as you trust their judgment and skill in this area. What you need to do is try asking them for copies of resumes that they have in their files that they feel did a good job in the sense that they have provided good information in an easy to read and logical format and make sure that the names are appropriately removed.

If you have gained a sample resume this way, then this would be invaluable when it comes to crafting the document that composes your life story including your ambition and portfolio of skills.
