Facebook and Twitter. Should I join them?

By Jan Shimano

There has been a lot of talk lately about the viral nature of Facebook and Twitter and how it can help build a person's business. Initially, I took very little notice but the chatter was getting louder and louder, so I decided to look into it.

What I discovered really took me by surprise. It became obvious that these were two serious sites. They were not only being used by teenagers who just enjoyed spending their spare time messaging back and fore to their friends. These sites were being used by all types of very prominent business people.

However, I still did not initially understand why they were doing this. They obviously were getting something out of it. Their time is very valuable to them, so I couldn't see them just flitting it away with trivia. When I delved deeper, I learned that these people were actually 'doing business' as they were 'tweeting' and some were saying that they were seeing significant increases in their profits, using this social networking system.

Some of them had even taken a course or two on how to best utilize these social networking sites. They took it seriously, and each day they set time aside to do some postings and to interact with others.

It was suggested that you build up your list of 'friends' gradually. Newbies are tempted to add as many friends as possible in as fast a time as possible. However, this is not a good idea. Quality is more important that quantity if you are looking at this from a business standpoint. The first 100-200 friends you add are the most impactful. You want to make these high level people in your industry.

It is suggested that you add new content to your pages on a daily basis. This does not have to take up much of your time. 5 or 10 minutes should be sufficient. You could comment on something that's happening in the news at that moment, or you could respond to a question that someone else had posted. The search engines love relevant content, so try to contribute regularly.

Facebook is the 5th largest visited website in the World and it is growing at an immense pace daily. If you want to be part of this new way of expanding your business via Web 2.0, which is social network marketing, then go right now and sign up for an account with Facebook and Twitter and start social networking. It's free, it's not time consuming at all and it will definitely help grow your business exponentially.

I now have my own Facebook and Twitter accounts and I invite you to sign up also.
