Total darkness can disorient a man as there is no focal point of reference. This is what it must have been like for the primitive humans that walked the earth in ancient times. The dead of the night brought with it unseen dangers that early humans were wary of, especially night stalking predators. This changed a bit when the fire was discovered people learn how to make one that gave illumination at night.

The night only turned to day with the invention of the incandescent bulb. Its invention though could not have been made possible with the technological advances in the field of electricity. Understanding electricity was the key to generating it. This was the beginnings of the modern day power plant. This led to the first lighting of a district in the home of the inventor.

With electricity now being harnessed and its generation mastered, more innovations, inventions, and scientific discoveries took place as scientists tinkered with it for possible applications. Among these discoveries was how electrical discharge affected the behavior of inert gases belonging to the noble gas family found the periodic table of elements.

The noble gas family includes helium, neon, xenon, krypton, and radon. These elements are inert meaning that it does not react to other substances like chemicals. As a result of experiments, it was found out that these inert gases reacted to electricity when placed inside a vacuum tube. An example of this reaction is the light that is produced by a fluorescent tube.

Further experimentation led to the discovery that these gases behave differently depending on the amount of electrical discharge applied. These produced almost all colors in the spectrum. These were not just ordinary but bright and vivid colors. Scientists took it a step further and developed it for industrial purposes. These developments resulted in what we now see in the cities.

Glass became the medium that had all the qualities to contain the reaction, and as it is transparent, the let the reaction emanate outwards, visible and glowing to the naked eye. Glass is perfect can be shaped as desired in any dimension, it is not a conductor of electricity as well. This material is just perfect for the manufacture of this light.

Today this technology is fully harnessed by business and industries. The glowing signs of logos, names, and various figures fill the city skyline at night. It is a good medium for advertisement. The glow and colors of these are very well entrenched in entertainment centers as it entices potential customers. The flicker of these is such a sight to see even in modern times.

A new technology is now making inroads in the field of lighting. This is the LED. It consumes very low power and is very cost effective as a replacement for this lighting assembly. But it has a long way to go as the glow and colors it produces it nowhere near that of present lights. At present neon lights are still the dominant mode for advertising, literally, in glowing terms.
