An Insight Into Mysticism And Christianity

By Jerry Foster

Generally, Christianity experience normally goes beyond the religion, and is usually founded on a patriarchal obedience and morality. Mysticism, on the other hand, may be used to imply the non-legalistic religion although with some spirituality life. This is a kind of heart-felt closeness to God that is based on some miraculous or joyful appreciation of the spirit ability to transform lives. Therefore, it is important to comprehend mysticism and Christianity so as to see how you can coexist with the two.

Christianity is considered to be a mystical faith with the mystical view considered to have existed far back during the times when Jesus lived. However, diverse political, historical and social reasons make mystic perception of Christians to be marginal. Christianity took its dominant position in the Roman empire during the fifth centuries. Mysticism, however, sought a profound closeness to divinity in retreating towards the deserts and wildernesses away from most cities.

The foundation of mysticism in deserted places resulted in the initial monasteries. Basically, these were people who lived together in perpetual prayer and meditation drawn from different areas across the world. These Christian mystics were predominantly found in monasteries and convents.

On the other hand, mystics have existed in every era and century of Christianity. Nevertheless, the political attributes of institutional churches led to the persecution of a number of them. Others also did learn to disguise their wise teachings through keenly worded poems and books that were perceived as non-threatening or against the religious authorities. In consequence, mystics together with their teachings remain to be real and are considered as the best-kept secrets of Christians.

Christians in the present generation still remain suspicious on mysticism. Nevertheless, a number of them are gradually embracing a transformative splendor of the core spiritual practices of mysticism such as the sacred reading, meditation and contemplative prayer.

At the same time, there are rediscoveries being made that the common Christian practices are some of the instruments used to help in contemplative silence such as the Rosary that is used by Catholic Church. These rediscoveries have also revealed that the less-known practices of the deep and the meditative intrinsic prayers done by the Eastern Orthodox Christianity helps Christians to embrace a unitive consciousness status.

Basically, the bible is the source of wisdom in the Christian Mystics. Nevertheless, those period of reading and interpretation according to the perception of anti-mysticism has made it easier to miss some visionary elements in the New Testament teachings of wisdom. For example, some bluntly contemplative statements found in the bible in Hebrew language initially have been mistranslated while translating into other languages.

However, the individuals who are keen and wise may be able to note the various mystical message contained in the Bible. As a matter of fact, mystics approaches to the Bible perceives it as a document containing the details of ancient Greeks as they took part in various activities with the Divinity. In addition, Christian religion is as well based on 2 controversial teachings perceived as mystical, the first being Jesus Christ is fully divine and secondly, fully human nature.
