Communicating During An Emergency Event

By Eric Holm

What are your plans for communications in an emergency situation? This should be a question asked in any emergency preparedness plan whether it's for your family, office, warehouse, shop, hospital, stadiums or other large event gatherings, church, schools, etc...

Something as simple as watching the news can make it abundantly clear that a communication plan is important. A flood, fire, hurricane, or earthquake can hit at any time, at any place. When this happens, those who are prepared will be in a much better position to end up safe and sound. Remember that traditional methods of communication, such as traditional land lines and mobile phones, tend to stop working during these calamities. The electricity also tends to go down. Because of this, having the right plan, tools, and other supplies is extremely important.

Luckily, most will not have to face this type of challenge. Although it is somewhat unlikely, there is still a possibility that it could occur. Remember that natural disasters are completely unpredictable. They can and do happen, so taking the extra time to get prepared can truly bring relief, even if an event never occurs. Go ahead and create an emergency communications kit beforehand just in case. When land lines and cell phones go down, being able to find and communicate with family, friends, and neighbors may be the difference between life and death. Consider bringing hand held radios, whistles, and a bull horn into the home. This can be vital for helping others find your location through the use of sound.

It is smart to have a plan in place with your family in the case of an emergency. Tools and supplies like the aforementioned bull horn, hand held radios and survival whistles are just the start of your plan for communications in an emergency situation. Investing in an am/fm solar powered or transistor radio is essential. Look for models that include speakers so that you can stay abreast of news and information about the emergency situation. A radio can be a lifesaver. Knowing which roads are closed or blocked and where emergency personnel are located can help you and get your family to safety as quickly as possible.

Remember that some of these types of radios come equipped with a siren. This is another potentially life-saving item to have in a survival kit. Simply being able to create noise and draw attention to yourself is key, especially if you find yourself trapped. Remember that preparation may seem trivial, but it has saved many lives.
