Understanding The Fire Protection Services

By Edna Booker

During blaze accidents, people get frightened and shaken up. The threat of a blaze is a very hazardous state since the blaze spreads fast over flammable substances leaving destruction in its wake. Fire protection services have been set up to try and arrest these kinds of situations of unexpected and destructive fires. It is a combination of systems installed in buildings; public facilities that handle emergencies and individual public awareness on how to respond to blaze emergencies to avoid panic and disorder.

There are three major levels of safety. The first one is passive protection. These are basically preventative measures that are put up to handle safety in buildings. This is implemented by using less flammable materials during the construction of a building. This means that the fire will take a very long time to move to other parts of the building.

Use of fireproof material to coat the surface of building is another passive safety measure. The idea here is to prevent a scenario where it gets to electrical wiring and gas pipes that could cause a disaster. The most used material is endothermic paint. This is used to paint the walls of places like kitchens where it is likely to start.

Firewalls are also used as passive safety methods. They are built to divide different sections of a building. This way, if it breaks in one of the sections, it will not spread to another part in the building. It is also used to separate buildings so that if a blaze occurs in one building, it will not affect the neighboring buildings.

Active protection is the other level of safety. These are measures that are out in place to contain the blaze should it start. They are always active in most buildings are started as a response the occurrence of a blaze. An example of such a system is a blaze detection unit. This system has sensors that detect smoke and temperature levels. When the levels get to a specified limit, they are classified as a fire then an alarm is raised to warn people.

Another form of active safety is the use of sprinkler systems. This is a network of sprinklers installed in the ceiling or roof of every room of the building. They are then connected to a water main. They have sensors that set them off if they detect high temperature and smoke. This can help stop a fire when it is still very small and therefore avoid damages and losses.

The other form of safety is the education part. This has a lot to do with human behavior and psychology. People working or living in a building are offered training and tips in case of a blaze. This is done by use of safety signs and fire drills in the space.

Finally, safety comes down to your individual awareness of the risk of fire in your space. This means that you should participate in drills and campaign to make your office or apartment building safer for you.
