By Helen Nelson

There are different ways of dealing with these irritating pests that surround homesteads and feed on fresh vegetables in the garden. Gardeners and even home owners have tried many ways in vain and the pests keep coming back. A good snail and slug control management depends on a combination of the methods as there is no one approved method. Experts advise the homeowners to be consistent and use various methods to ensure that the pests are fully eliminated. This article comprehensively explains on loose slug control.

Many gardeners have been advised to have ponds near their gardens especially in areas where the pests are dense. The ponds attract frogs and other animals. The ponds will eliminate the pests as most of these animals are known to feed on the slugs and snails. The presence of the frogs in the gardens will eradicate the manifestation of this pests.

It is important to note that the slugs belong to a group called mollusk phylum and are similar in structure to snails. They generally are known to move by gliding and leaving mucus or slime as it was started above. The slime facilitates their movement and far along dries up to form a silver like trace that indicates the presence of the pest. They are hermaphrodites so they are able to lay eggs after mating.

Experts have also recommended ducks as some of them are carnivores. Areas that are faced with a high manifestation of the slugs and snails it is recommendable to keep ducks so that they may feed on these pests. It is also advisable to keep the ducks pen near the garden hence allowing them to trace the pests easily. However, it is important to get the right breed of ducks as some feed on plants.

The slugs and snails love to feed on seedlings as well as moist foliage thus, they are mostly found on sprouting plants. This therefore determines how you vigilantly deal with these pests when you are staring to grow your plants. They may destroy the seedlings and the succulent foliage hence limiting their growth. When setting up a garden it is recommendable to choose plants that are not attractive to the pests especially in areas whereby they are dense.

These pests are nomads and can thus easily move from one place to another compared to the snails the slugs can live anywhere. The snails carry their shells and will go back to where they hibernated. They are night-time animals and will therefore hide during the day under leaves or flowers thus it is very hard to find them.

Centipedes are also major predators as they are carnivorous night time hunters. Same as the beetles the centipedes feed on the eggs of the pests and also hunt them during the night when they are active. Centipedes also love moist areas and can be found on the leaves surface and beneath flowers hence deal with the pests effectively.

Conclusively, most people argue that both the immature and adults feed on the green vegetation. The black slug is known to not do much harm as it feeds on dung, rotting material and even meat above living plants.
