Tips To Get You Through American Airport Security

By Frances Wood

All travelers are required to go through strict security checks in American airports. This applies to children, elderly, persons with disability, new and frequent fliers alike. American airport security demands cannot be compromised or bypassed, whether you are on a domestic or international flight. Anyone who does not adhere to the rules will not go through the airport and may even be prosecuted for it.

Luggage should be packed accordingly. There are restrictions on the luggage that should be in the carry-in bag and what should go to the checked-bag. Other items like spray paint, flares, ammunition and loaded guns, among others should remain at home. You are allowed to carry short tools that are less than 7 inches, scissors, common lighters and even gas cartridges in your checked luggage. Plan ahead to avoid leaving some of your items at the airport.

Pack your luggage meticulously and reasonably such that officials do not need to handle your cloths. Assume that your bags will go through visual inspection. If there is an item you would not like handled by strangers like toothpaste and inner wears, tuck it safely away. Use layering to make it easier to inspect your bag.

Dressing should indicate that you are a traveler. The shoes and other clothes worn should be easy to remove. Cloths that have a lot of metals like thick metallic jewelry, belts and decorated shoes should be left at home. Jackets and coats must be taken through x-ray. Leave any item that will cause you trouble or suspicion at home. In case you have a laptop, use the bags approved by TSA. With such a bag, it will not be necessary to remove the laptop.

Food is allowed into a flight but there are limitations to what you can carry. Solid food is allowed but liquids, syrups and semi-liquids like jam, sauce, jellies and syrups will not be permitted if the container is more than 3.4oz. Other foods may need to be subjected to additional checks despite being allowed through clearance.

Understand the operation of advanced imaging technology. This technology is advanced and enables the officials at the airport to detect hidden objects, especially metals before they are passed through terminals. The electromagnetic waves released by the gadgets are harmless since they are below what your phone produces. The machine produces a skeletal image of your body that cannot be used to identify you. This scan is optional for people who do not want to be subjected to metal detectors.

Children and the elderly should be prepared for the security checks. The checks are mandatory for all. Children should understand the need for such checks and why they must comply. Dress them appropriately for the checks. If you are travelling with a person with special needs, notify officials at the airport for special consideration.

There are officials in airports to assist anyone who may have a query or concern during clearance. Make the process easier for you by calming down and avoiding anxiety so that you do not look suspicious. There is information on TSA website and blogs that can help you prepare for these checks. Since the procedures may chance on short notice, prepare and adjust accordingly.
