Keratoconus Treatment NY And The Options Available

By Dennis Wright

Keratoconus is the condition that results when the cornea starts to thin and slowly starts to bulge outward into a shape that resembles a cone. The shape brings about blurred vision and is likely to lead to eye insensitivity to light. This condition affects both eyes and is known to start affecting people between 10 years and 25 years. In consideration of Keratoconus treatment NY residents should be well versed with the available options.

Treatment that is chosen will depend on how severe the condition is and the manner in which it is progressing. If it is moderate, you an use contact lenses and eyeglasses. For most individuals, the cornea finally becomes stable after years of use. If the condition is moderate, there will be vision problems that need to be treated. For other people, their cornea becomes scarred and it becomes hard putting on contact lenses. The best way out might be surgery.

There are various lenses that can be used. Glasses and soft contacts are able to correct distorted or blurry vision in the early stages. However, you would have to change prescription of the glasses as shape of the corneas changes. Hard contacts are the next procedure in treatment. They might feel a bot uncomfortable in the beginning but most people get to adjust to using them. They do provide perfect vision and can be custom made to fully fit the corneas.

Hybrid lenses have rigid centers with a soft ring around their outside for improved comfort. For people who cannot tolerate hard contacts, this is the best option. When it comes to scleral lenses, they are essential for irregular shapes within the cornea when the condition has advanced. Rather than rest on the corneas like conventional lenses, they sit on white portion of eyes that is known as sclera. They vault above the corneas without necessarily touching it.

In the case of people with scarring of the cornea or a lot of thinning, surgery is a good option. The same applies to instances in which vision has depreciated a great deal and lenses are thus not effective. There are various surgical procedures available which depend on where the bulging cone is and severity of the condition.

One form of surgery is corneal inserts. For this procedure, there is placement of clear and crescent shaped inserts made of plastic into the cornea to make flat the cones. The insert also supports shape of the cornea and improves vision in the process. Inserts serve to restore shape of the cornea, helping to slow down advancement of keratoconus. They also make it easy for contact lenses to be fitted.

Corneal transplant is another option. This comes in handy when one has corneal scarring and extreme thinning. There is either transplanting of a part of the cornea or the whole of it. Recovery from this procedure takes up to a year and one will still be wearing rigid contacts to have clearer vision. Full recovery happens after several years.

The procedure of corneal transplant is a successful one. It however comes with some complications. They include among others graft rejection, astigmatism and poor vision. There also are people who may be unable to wear contacts.
