The Importance Of Reducing Racism In Sports Media

By Tammie Caldwell

Racial prejudice is ultimately an evil thing. However, even though people know that it is something derogatory and unpleasant, there are still a lot who close their hearts and continue looking down on those they deem as inferior to them. Though that may be saddening, such occurrence is still prevalent these days.

Even when you look at the world where athletes are, you can see a lot of situations where racial prejudice has become evident. It does not matter if the sport is basketball, soccer, golf, or ice hockey, racial prejudice is there. Such discrimination hurts not only the players but the fans as well. Not only that, there is also racism in sports media.

However, even when it is still rampant, people should guide themselves toward the elimination of such discrimination. People will only suffer from the things that arise from such discriminating behavior. Be it the bullies or the victims, everyone will be impacted by the actions they take. Here are some of the basic reasons for moving toward the elimination of racial discrimination.

First, know that racial discrimination becomes the factor that prevents people who are subjected to discriminating behaviors from achieving their full potential as humans. The discriminating behavior against people can make them feel as if they lack something in them. This can then deteriorate their ability to achieve their potential.

It is also the reason that impedes or prevents people from giving their fullest contribution to society. As a citizen of a country and as a human being, it is one's responsibility to contribute to the progress of society. However, when these people are suffering from the prejudice of the society itself, they will not be able to contribute what they should be able to.

When the victims are unable to give their contributions to the society, they are also affecting the ones who are subjecting them to that discrimination. After all, the discriminating party will not be able to benefit from the potential contributions victims could have given them. As a result of that, the community might greatly weaken as a whole.

The likelihood of receiving retaliation from the victims gets higher as time passes by as well. While one might be able to tolerate bad things for a while, no person is built to last these discriminatory behaviors for a long time. They would either break or they would either fight back. When they fight back, something bad might happen.

Being in a democratic country, discrimination against anyone should not be done. Discrimination can very easily go against the democratic ideals that a democratic government promotes. That is why it is only a given to reduce the racial prejudice in a democratic country as much as possible, if elimination of that racial prejudice is not likely.

Racial prejudice should also be eliminated because it is illegal. It does not matter what country it is, what state one belongs to, what religion one devotes himself or herself in, racial prejudice is unpleasant. That is why it should be reduced or totally eliminated. People will get along better that way.
