The fact is that even during the depths of the worst recession you'll have no trouble finding a job working on an offshore rig. Not only do they pay well but even without a college degree you can start in any time you like. In fact you may already have the skills for one of the most sought after positions on a oil drilling platform.
Are you a welder, a mechanic, or a pipe fitter? Or what about if you cook, or run a crane? Well these are just a few of the types of job skills that qualify you for some of the most sought after platform jobs today. Also talk about racking up the hours. Would you believe that on some platforms you get paid for a full 24 hours per day? Do the math!
Now of course having some related skills will only help but the fact is that if you're willing to start in on the bottom and work your way up, you'll have no trouble finding platform work right out of high school. They'll train you on the job and even those starting positions are surprisingly well paying. It's year round work, 7 days a week, with free room, and board.
Understand this though. That is that you will have to pass an initial drug test and also periodic spot checks as well. Now if you even so much as smoke pot you'll be fired on the spot and then you also run the risk of being blacklisted by other businesses that contract labor for the drilling companies. What this all means is that you need to make "damn sure" you can stay clean.
You also need to understand that once you get out on an offshore drilling platform, you'll be pretty much isolated from the world for the time you are out there. Now the least amount of time you will stay is three weeks but if you can handle it, you can stay out there months if you want to. You see, the longer you're willing to stay the more they're willing to pay.
So the bottom line when you add it all up, is this type of work requires a certain mental toughness that's hard to find in people. Now the good news though is that if you have it and are single, or in a very stable marriage, and willing to work in any type of weather, the financial rewards can be huge for doing offshore platform work.
