Information On Stair Lifts In Maryland

By Linda Martin

A stair lift refers to a mechanical device used to lift people, and sometimes luggage, up and down staircases. If the staircases is wide enough, a rail will be mounted onto the treads to accommodate a chair, also called the lifting platform. The chair travels along the rails to deliver people at either end of the staircase. Other spellings used for this product are stairlift and stair-lift. Stair lifts in Maryland are supplied and installed by companies that have been in business for a very long time.

Straight and curved are the two types of stairlifts in existence today. These two versions of stairlifts are similar in most aspects with the main different being in the nature of the rails the are installed. The rails in curved models are curved to allow the chair to move on stairwells with corners. These curves are not present in straight varieties. One should get quotes from three firms before settling on any specific company. These quotes are the basis for price comparison, which can help to get products with good features at low costs.

The method through which one is required to make payment must also be considered when making a purchase. Payment through monthly installments is one of the most common method companies use. The product remains in the premises of the supplier until at such a time when the buyer finishes making the payments. One should request to have the product installed before making the final payment. When one is satisfied with the way the product is installed and how it is working, they may finish off the payment.

Some companies allow members of the public to rent their stairlifts for an agreed amount of time. The payment is usually made in the form of a first installment, which is usually bulky, followed by a monthly fee. The initial payment may start from 500 dollars while the monthly fees can be as little as 10 dollars.

Some firms only make a single charge to the client at installation time. The quote provided by these companies cover all costs that can be incurred in using the device. Some of the costs covered in the quotes are installation, uninstallation, transportation, and maintenance costs. One is allowed to rent the device for one month or as long as twenty years or more according to their needs.

Installation of these devices is done directly on stairwell treads and not the wall. Thus, their weight is supported by the stairlift. Straight models need over two hours to get installed while curved variants can take even more time. The device becomes operational immediately after being installed without the need to wait for some time.

The design of modern products allows them to run on rechargeable batteries. The charging of the batteries occurs automatically from the power supply in the household. In case of a power outage, the device automatically switches from using electricity to the battery. This way, the product never gets stuck midways on the rail during power outage. Older models suffered from this problem a lot.

The maximum weight of the stairlift often depends on the company, model, and type. However, in most cases, the maximum weight the product can support ranges from 120 to 180 kilograms. It is good to buy a product that can support more weight in order to accommodate both light and heavy people.
