What The Work Of An Electrician Entails

Electricians refer to specialists in electrical wiring who command skills in working with various pieces of equipment and structures including buildings and stationary machines. There work may require them to work on old and new sites. New sites are usually installed with fresh electrical components and there is no prior wiring. This is different from old sites where there is old wiring that only needs to be repaired or maintained. It is not very easy to become a qualified electrician. One must be able to follow technical plans and excellent practical skills are mandatory.

Qualifying to work in this field requires one to have certain academic as well as professional qualifications. In the UK, and industry-recognized level 3 qualification is an entry requirement. People usually earn these qualifications while they are working. There is room for one to undertake extra training that allows them to work as specialists in a specific area. One may choose to specialize in any field of their interest including mobile platforms, airplanes, water vessels, and environmental technology systems.

Electrotechnical apprenticeship is one the routes that is commonly exploited to enter this field. Combing apprenticeship training, college education, on-work skills places one in a very good position to advance their career. Becoming fully qualified takes somewhere between 2 and 4 years. The local job market usually determines what apprenticeship training programs are in an area.

Local colleges offer full time and part time courses which anyone interested in entering this industry can take. There are many areas covered during training including basic electrical theory and industry safety and health. While in college, learners also gain many practical skills. One can proceed to gain higher qualifications once they have basic college training.

The areas in which electricians work are many and diverse. As part of what they do, they ensure optimal performance of equipment by installing, inspecting, and testing them. They also diagnose problems and fix them. Electrotechnical career has different categories of professionals. Among the categories are maintenance, machine repair and rewind, highway systems, installation electricians, and electrotechnical panel building.

Those who specialize in installations may install lighting, fire protection, data network, and power systems in all kinds of buildings including shops, sports stadiums, homes, and offices. Those who specialize in maintenance perform routine checks of systems to ensure that they are working safely and efficiently. Highway systems electricians install and maintain traffic management systems and street lights.

Basically, electricians work during week days for more than 37 hours per week. They may have night shifts and overtimes are common. The job involves excess travelling as jobs change regularly. Workers may stay for several days without returning home because of work. Owning a car and having a driving license makes travelling easier.

Working with heights is typical in this line of work. Workers often use ladder, scaffoldings and other devices to reach where they need to work. Salary one earns is usually dependent on the employer, level of education, and experience. Income is regulated by certain bodies. There are also nationally set rates that cover travel expenses, travelling time, and accommodation costs.
