Medical Coders: How Get Good Job Skills

By Jason Birdy

There are many valuable lessons that a biller needs to learn about medical billing and coding. For starters, coders need to understand that they need to go back to school for training. Many coders that did ICD-9 knew how to do coding a certain way. It was a lot easier to find the correct code for a certain type of illness. Today, the coding world has changed. We are dealing with an extremely sophisticated and well-built system. There has to be a lot of training between physicians and their staff.

A lot of people ask if medical billing and coding are the same. In reality, they work with one another and are not exactly the same. For instance, if you are a coder, you job is to search for the appropriate codes so that the billers can take it over from there and send the claim off to the insurance company. Once this happens, the job is basically done. A coder can get paid more if they learn how to do billing and coding at the same time. Right now, New Jersey seems to be paying their coders the highest. It is estimated that a coder gets paid around $70,000 to $100,000 a year. If you live somewhere like Bergen County, the pay is much on the higher end because the cost of living is also higher.

If you submit incorrect codes, then you are going to face a lot of rejections from the insurance companies. Insurance companies want to make sure that you have the appropriate funds coming in on a regular basis. This means that you have good revenue cycle management. If you fail to get payments for your physician, the practice could shut down. It is hard to get reimbursements back from the insurance companies these days because they are looking for any possible error that you could possibly make.

When your claims come back rejected, it is important to ask someone how to make it right. The biggest mistakes that many coders make is that they try to keep on submitting the claim multiple times and with no help or assistance. It is not an easy path to decide on. The world is a place in which we must come to understand and know more about. Life in general can keep us in the loop for a while. It is important to just focus on new beginnings for your medical practice and do what is necessary to make it right.

In time, you will come to see this industry as being profitable. Most coders today say that they are earning good money in their professional work. Some are saying that it's a lot harder to code then they ever knew before. Either way, it's okay to feel some of the pressure. Most people say that feeling the pressure is a way to know that you never have everything completely under control. Things need to happen.
