Help For The New Business Owner: Business Security Tips

By Mark Mahaffey

If you are a new business owner, congratulations! It is an exciting thing to go into business for yourself. However, it is easy to overlook one important aspect of being an entrepreneur - business security. Crime is everywhere, and this means that you will need to plan to keep yourself safe.

Happily, you can do several things to keep yourself safe from crime. You just need to follow a few suggestions. For example, think about your employees. You could be losing money if they are stealing from you! It is important to create a policy and procedure manual so that they know what kind of behavior you expect from them and what the consequences for crime are.

You can also improve the security at your business by having a routine time that you shred the sensitive documents that you are finished with. You do not want these documents to fall into the wrong hands, so schedule a shredding session once per week, once per month or whatever schedule works best for you.

It is also wise to spend some time reasoning through access control issues in your business security plan. It is usually not a good idea to allow all of your employees to have access to all your sensitive documents and offices. Use access control to keep these areas under high security.

Security lighting is also important. Burglars like to break into buildings at night when it is dark. They know that there is less of a chance of getting caught, because they may not be noticed as readily. Therefore, if you put up lots of security lights around your building, thieves may choose to go someplace else when planning a break in!

In addition, it is a good idea to install a security system. If you connect it to a monitoring company, you can rest assured that you will be alerted if anyone tries to break into your building day or night..
