Some Publicly Traded Sports Teams Have Stock For Sale

By Cornelius Nunev

Contrary to public opinion, one does not have to be mega-rich to become a part owner of a sports team. There are several publicly-traded sports teams one can buy shares in, some of which are not bad investments at all.

Most American not public

One of the lyrics in the song "Money" by Pink Floyd goes "I think I need a football team." Granted, they do not mean the NFL, since soccer is called football everywhere except Canada, Australia and the United States However, it would be neat to be the owner of sports team. The hitch is that most sports teams are privately owned. To buy one or an ownership stake, one has to be prosperous.

A small number of sports groups, however, are publicly-traded, meaning that shares are bought and sold on stock markets. For not a whole lot of money, a person can purchase a share in publicly-traded sports groups and are technically an owner, even if that one share doesn't amount to much. Some are even decent investments. However, most are sports groups in other countries.

Getting in on IPO

Earlier this year, it was announced that Formula One, the world's premier racing series, was going to have an initial public offering in Singapore. Unfortunately, according to the Wall Street Journal, the majority owners of Formula One, CVC Capital Partners, put the brakes on the Formula One IPO. However, they do plan to hold it later this year.

According to the Atlantic, an Initial Public Offering is scheduled for Manchester United already. The team is essentially the New York Yankees of soccer, and it is owned by the Glazer family, according to the Wall Street Journal. The family also owns football's Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The IPO is being done in the U.S., though it was originally prepared for Singapore.

Do not purchase all

Since Manchester United is the biggest sports franchise on the planet, it is most likely a pretty good buy. The Madison Square Gardens have traded for over the Standard and Poor 500 industry average consistently too, which means it is a good buy too, according to Daily Finance.

BusinessWeek explained that the American Basketball Association is trading for 5 cents per share currently, which was not good news. There has also been bad news for World Wrestling Entertainment, which is publicly traded, according to Daily Finance.

Some other famous soccer groups are publicly owned but according to the Atlantic, don't do also as typical stocks, as their market performance is heavily tied to game performance, and losing streaks tend to tank share value.

The NFL does not allow more than 32 owners of any one team, which is why the Green Bay Packers are the only American sports team publicly traded. The Packers joined the league after the rule though, so they can get away with it. The team does not pay dividends since it is a nonprofit and cannot be sold for profit, so it is not a good investment.
