Finding Peace in a Memorial Service

By Rey Vetangelo

Memorial services are some of the best ways for people to find healing after the passing of a loved one. These times are tough for everyone, and they often are heart wrenching and painful to go through. Memorial services offer a way for people to find healing. The point of the service is to honor the person who passed on, but also to help everyone else find catharsis.

This can be sometimes unpleasant or heart wrenching as the prospect of dealing with such business like decisions can feel to some as being insensitive to the memory of the deceased but rest assured that proper planning of a funeral service is, in fact, a responsible and necessary act that needs to be managed by the next of kin.

Leaning on others and sharing in the experience with them allows for deep connections with them to be made at this time. These connections make it so that friendships are deepened and a greater sense of love is felt for everyone else. These times are trying, but with the help and support of loved ones and friends in attendance it is possible to find catharsis and healing. The healing process is one that will take time, but can ultimately be achieved.

It is the sharing of feelings and emotions with others that makes these experiences so very powerful in nature. With a common bond of loss and the need to heal, it is easy to know why people would feel so close to each other. Being able to talk with others and express feelings is one of the best ways to address them. Those that are having a rough time but do not have a good way to express or vocalize it will likely not be as comforted as those who choose to share with others.

These events are also a celebration of the person who passed on. Friends and family gather to celebrate the life that they lived, along with their accomplishments and all of the joy that they brought to others. Such a celebration is an affirmation of life, reminding everyone that life goes on and that there is much more to be experienced. Therefore, these events will have special significance for every individual that is in attendance.

Akin to when the funeral should take place is where the funeral services will take place. Most funeral homes will have a specious room in which the family can choose to hold the funeral services or a block of time at a local church or other house of worship may also be requested and reserved for the holding of funeral services.

The reasons for having a memorial service are vast, and cannot be fully expounded upon or readily quantified. These events serve as an important catalyst for both grief and hope and renewal, while paying respects to someone who is very important to others.

However, there also is the potential for joy and hope to be found in sharing with others and leaning on them throughout the experience. Finding hope in such an experience is one of the best ways overall that people can heal and start to find their own context. Everyone will be different in what they get out of the experience. But, hopefully everyone will realize that they are loved and that it is a precious thing.

The services themselves can be much altered and arranged by the family of the deceased to fit the needs, both financially and practically, of that family. Perhaps the most important aspect to remember when planning a funeral is the wishes of those individuals who have passed away through examination of their will or other documents that will offer suggestions on how they wish their funeral services to be orchestrated.
